About the 2009 Forester
BASICS...
The Subaru Forester is an all-wheel-drive car-based SUV introduced in 1998. Made by Fuji Heavy Industries in Ota Gumma, Japan.
The Forester has done very well in Insurance Institute crash tests and various consumer magazine ratings, usually earning top spots and recommended ratings.

2009 model UPDATES  and Forester News

1/5/13 recall Optional puddle lights (small outside lights under each door that illuminate the ground) may short circuit when exposed to saltwater, which could lead to overheating and possible fire. Models involved have the optional puddle lights and are the 2010 and 2011 Legacy and Outback, 2009-2012 Foresters sold before January 2012, and 2006-2012 Tribecas sold before January 2012. Reportedly around 54000 car in the US could be involved. According to online reports, the problem has been known for years with various fixes failing to solve it. The latest repair will be new wiring with a fuse. Recall #WQE-41

3/13/12 recall- The rear center seatbelt on  Foresters built between November 26, 2007 and March 13, 2012 might not work correctly with some child safety seats (CRSs) that require a short belt routing configuration. The center seatbelt has an Automatic Locking Retractor that may not lock when such a configuration is used. It's necessary to replace the rear seat center seatbelt assembly. Recall code #WQA-37. Call Subaru 800-782-2783, or NHTSA at 888-327-4236 about campaign #12V099000.

3/24/09 Update crash test new roof strength rating system and 09 Forester does well!'The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety is launching a new roof strength rating system to help consumers pick vehicles that will help protect them in rollover crashes. Twelve small SUVs are the first to be put to the test. Only 4 earn the top rating of good. The Volkswagen Tiguan has the strongest rated roof, and the Kia Sportage has the weakest among the 2008-09 models evaluated.
This new rating system is based on Institute research showing that occupants in rollover crashes benefit from stronger roofs. Vehicles rated good must have roofs that are more than twice as strong as minimum federal safety standards require.
The Tiguan, Subaru Forester, Honda Element, and Jeep Patriot earn good ratings. The Suzuki Grand Vitara, Chevrolet Equinox, Toyota RAV4, Nissan Rogue, and Mitsubishi Outlander are rated acceptable. Roofs on the Honda CR-V and Ford Escape are marginal, and the Kia's is poor.
"We anticipate that our roof strength test will drive improved rollover crash protection the same way our frontal offset and side impact consumer test programs have led to better protection in these kinds of crashes," says Institute president Adrian Lund...
...How roofs are evaluated: In the Institute's roof strength test, a metal plate is pushed against 1 side of a roof at a constant speed. To earn a good rating, the roof must withstand a force of 4 times the vehicle's weight before reaching 5 inches of crush. This is called a strength-to-weight ratio. For an acceptable rating, the minimum required strength-to-weight ratio is 3.25. A marginal rating value is 2.5. Anything lower than that is poor.
... Cars have been built to meet the same roof crush standard, Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 216, since 1973. The rule was extended in 1994 to include all passenger vehicles up to a gross weight rating of 6,000 pounds. Many SUVs and pickups are heavier, so they're exempt. In 2005, the government proposed an upgrade to cover these larger vehicles and require the roofs on all passenger vehicles to have a strength-to-weight ratio of 2.5. Many vehicles already meet this ratio and would earn only a marginal rating in the Institute's new roof strength test. A final rule is still pending...' more from IIHS.org

PZEV
a brief simple summary
(a brief, simple summary)
The EPA says PZEV is the cleanest running gas car on today's market based on emissions testing for carbon-containing compounds, oxides of nitrogen, particulate matter, and other tailpipe nastiness.
It is required in CA, CT, NJ, NY, MA, ME, RI, VT, PA, OR, and WA
What is does
1. A charcoal cannister catches unburned gas left in the engine when it's turned off so it doesn't just evaporate.
2. Fuel injectors close tighter when they're not in use.
3. It has a finer mesh in the catalytic converter, as well as optimized placement of precious metal.
4. The engine's electronic brain is set to run hotter at start up so the catalytic converter starts working faster.

Arrival: 2009 Subaru Forester

New Team Member Gets Hearty Welcome

As with all our Sport/Utility of the Year winners, the 2009 Subaru Forester received an invitation to join our long-term fleet and, naturally, it rsvp'd yes. Rather than sample the available turbocharged 224-horsepower engine, we opted for the naturally aspirated version for a few reasons: First, we have played extensively with the more powerful 2.5-liter turbo in our long-term Impreza WRX and felt the standard flat-four would be a nice change of pace, so to speak. Second, the N.A. Forester is Subaru's volume leader, so why not get a taste of what most people are living with?

Subaru offers its non-turbo Forester in three trim levels: standard 2.5X, 2.5X Premium, and 2.5X Limited. Further, if you reside in a state that has adopted California's emissions specifications, then your 2.5-liter receives a Partial Zero Emission Vehicles (PZEV) stamp, which costs an additional $200. For our long-termer, we chose a 2.5X Limited PZEV with navigation ($1800), XM satellite radio ($453), Bluetooth microphone kit ($237), and a cargo net ($46).

We have clicked just over 6000 miles so far and have had no major issues. Recently, however, a few minor gremlins have reared their ugly heads. For instance, our navigation system currently has our office located somewhere between Long Beach and Catalina Island, smack dab in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. Yes, we have recalibrated it numerous times; sometimes that works, other times it doesn't. When it does work, it lasts for only a little while, then poof, we're back in the middle of the big blue. Another bug seems to be living in our satellite radio; reception is spotty, often sounding like someone is turning the volume up and down very quickly. Other times, after a sudden buzz or pop, the satellite resets back to channel 001 and forces you to wait a minute as it seemingly refreshes itself. The last gremlin is an annoying plastic squeak that resides in the rear cargo area and occurs at slower speeds, over somewhat broken or uneven pavement. We can't hear it on the freeway, but as soon as we drop down to surface-street speeds, it returns.

Otherwise, everyone on staff has been enjoying time in the Forester, relishing the smooth ride and more-than-capable boxer engine. And while the four-speed automatic delivers respectable acceleration and fuel economy, two more gears would take it a couple steps toward perfection.

As of this writing, our Forester hasn't been on many adventures, but it's slated for an upcoming journey to Utah. Stay tuned for a report on that expedition, as well as any remedies to those irritating gremlins.

2009 Subaru Forester Test Drive Overview

2009 Subaru Forester Test Drive Review

The Forester has been overhauled for the 2009 model year with a new rounded look that is both more modern and more car-like than the boxy profile the vehicle carried before. Some models, such as the XT trim, have muscular styling touches like a functional hood scoop and wheel-arch bulges. Overall, the look is meant to turn the Forester from a rough-and-tumble backwoods vehicle into something with more mainstream styling.

Inside, the Forester borrows heavily from the Subaru Impreza. Its dash carries a sweeping shape with silver accents that makes the cockpit look and feel cozier and more driver-oriented. While the vehicle didn’t lose any of its capability in the move to a kinder, gentler shape, interior quality and finishes took a giant leap forward.

2009 Subaru Forester Test Drive Review

The 2009 Forester is available with two engine choices. The standard mill is a 2.5-liter boxer four-cylinder engine that produces 170 horsepower and 170 pound-feet of torque. It’s paired with a four-speed automatic transmission. A turbocharged version of that engine is also available and is rated at 224 horsepower and 226 lb-ft of torque. All-wheel drive (AWD) is standard. A five-speed manual transmission and four-speed automatic are available.

The base engine has to work hard to get the Forester up to highway speeds, and once there, passing is a true chore for the powertrain. The four-speed automatic stays busy, trying to find the right gear for the situation. With a turbocharger, the upgraded engine is much better suited for Forester duty, and truly makes it feel like a different vehicle. The five-speed manual transmission is a more suitable choice for the base engine, and works well, despite having longer-than-expected gear throws.

While the Forester isn't likely to win a drag race, the vehicle is more than able to hold its own, both on- and off-road. It features 8.7 inches of ground clearance—which puts it on the level of several large SUVs—and the new double-wishbone rear suspension that came with the 2009 update helps soak up all but the worst ruts and bumps in the road.

2009 Subaru Forester Test Drive Review

The Forester was designed with function at the top of its priorities list, which shows in nearly every aspect of its design. The front seats are comfortable and well padded, but lack side bolstering and hip support. Adding leather brings an extra layer of comfort, and an almost luxury feel to the Forester’s seating accommodations.

Thanks to a longer wheelbase, back-seat legroom is generous, and the 60/40 split-folding bench seat remains comfortable on longer drives. Cargo space is also plentiful, as the Forester offers 33.5 cubic feet with the rear seats up and 68.3 when they’re folded flat. The rear-door openings are large and relatively square, which makes for easy loading and unloading of car seats and children.

Thoughtful packages make using the Forester year round much less stressful as well. Options like the all-weather package bring upgraded floor mats, heated seats, and more to make the Forester a formidable winter vehicle.

Outward visibility from the driver's seat is great in all directions. That’s due to Subaru’s thoughtful approach to pillar design, which allows for large windows and little obstruction.

2009 Subaru Forester Test Drive Review

Technology offerings vary greatly, depending on the trim level. Base Forester models get a four-speaker audio system, an AM/FM stereo, a CD player, cruise control, and speed-sensitive volume controls. A six-disc CD changer, automatic climate controls, seven-speaker audio, navigation, SiriusXM satellite radio, steering-wheel-mounted audio controls, and wireless phone connectivity are all offered.

In most cases, the Forester’s audio and entertainment technologies work just fine. There’s a level of simplicity and an uncluttered feel that makes them easy to use. Some features, however, need more polish. In models equipped with a navigation system, the screen can feel almost useless at times, because it’s nearly impossible to see in sunlight, or with sunglasses on. The voice guidance is also annoying, and urges drivers to move when stopped at red lights and in traffic.

2009 Subaru Forester Test Drive Review

As a company, Subaru maintains a strong focus on vehicle safety. The Forester is a great example of those efforts, having received a "Top Safety Pick" rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) for the 2009 model year. That award is based on top "good" scores in all crash-test categories. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) rated the Forester five stars for front crash protection, five stars for side crash protection, and four stars for rollover resistance.

Several safety features are standard for the 2009 Forester. It comes with stability control, braking assistance, dual front-impact airbags, side curtain airbags, remote keyless entry, side-impact bars, seat-mounted side-impact airbags, an occupant-sensing airbag system, traction control, anti-lock brakes, seatbelt pretensioners, fog lights, and daytime running lights.

2009 Subaru Forester Test Drive Review

With an MSRP starting below $20,000, the Subaru Forester offers a compelling mix of capability, utility, and value. Standard all-wheel drive and extensive safety equipment are both great reasons to check out the Forester. Making the deal sweeter, the 2009 updates brought more new tech and features for less money, and the improvements made to the Forester’s interior have only sweetened the deal.

The Forester's fuel-economy ratings are competitive as well. With the base 2.5-liter engine and a manual gearbox, it's rated at 20/27/22 mpg city/hwy/combined. An automatic transmission changes those numbers to 20/26/22 mpg, and upgrading to the turbocharged engine results in EPA-estimated fuel economy ratings of 19/24/21 mpg.

At $19,995 before destination, taxes, or options, the Subaru Forester 2.5X base model is the least expensive of the bunch and the 2.5XT Limited trim tops out at $28,195. The turbo engine in higher trims requires premium fuel, which increases operating costs over the long term as well.
