24.5" HP Omen 25 gaming monitor benchmarks: color, brightness, price response, input and full specs review

The minimum response rate of HP Omen 25 is 1 ms, which is eliminates ghosting effects. The HP Omen 25 has the Display Port and this is essential for NVIDIA cards to work with AMD FreeSync. In terms of pixel density, the HP Omen 25 has an excellent density of 89 pixels-per-inch, resulting in sharper text and picture quality. HP Omen 25 has a total input lag of 7 ms, which is excellent among the competition. The brightness of HP Omen 25 is significantly better than other monitors. For the average response rate, the HP Omen 25 scores 4 ms, which ensures effective synchronization with the high refresh rate. For the extremely fast frame rates, the HP Omen 25 has a maximum refresh rate of 144 Hz that allows smoother gameplay. With the AMD FreeSync support, this monitor is compatible with both AMD and NVIDIA graphics cards. The monitor has a VESA mount. To compensate for graphically demanding games, the HP Omen 25 has a very good low end adaptive refresh rate of 42 Hz that can adapt to more lower frame rate drops. The HP Omen 25 is a relatively new monitor. For graphics color quality, the HP Omen 25 has an average color depth of 6 -bit, resulting in dithered gradients and more slightly less accurate colors. The monitor uses a TN panel which suffers from color shifting when viewed from horizontal and vertical angles and has slightly washed colors compared to IPS and VA panels. The monitor has an unimpressive contrast ratio of 1000 : 1.

General info

Total tilt adjustment is the ability for the monitor head to move up and down. Tilt adjustment enables a user to change the viewing position of the display, creating a more comfortable view of the screen.

A swivel stand allows you to adjust the position of the display left or right, so you can position it to the desired angle.

The VESA mount is a standard used by most manufacturers. A device that supports the VESA mount can be mounted on many different supports, from arms to wall mounts.

The height represents the vertical dimension of the product. We consider a smaller height better because it assures easy maneuverability.

The width represents the horizontal dimension of the product. We consider a smaller width better because it assures easy maneuverability.

We consider a thinner chassis better because it makes the product more compact and portable. Thinness is a feature highlighted by many manufacturers of mobile devices, but it is essential for a wide range of products.

We consider a lower weight better because lighter devices are more comfortable to carry. A lower weight is also an advantage for home appliances, as it makes transportation easier, and for many other types of products.

The screen can be turned into portrait mode which is better to view isolated images like documents, photos, etc.

The gross weight of the product when packaged, including all wrapping, and boxing.

Display

Response time is how long it takes for a display to change the state of pixels, in order to show new content. The less time it takes to respond, the less likely it is to blur fast-changing images.

Resolution is an essential indicator of a screen's image quality, representing the maximum amount of pixels that can be shown on the screen. The resolution is given as a compound value, comprised of horizontal and vertical pixels.

The bigger the screen size is, the better the user experience.

Pixel density is a measurement of a screen's resolution, expressed as the number of pixels per inch (PPI) on the screen. A higher pixel density translates into more clarity and sharpness for the images rendered on the screen, thus improving the quality of the viewing experience.

IPS (In-Plane Switching) is a technology used for LCDs. It was designed to overcome the main limitations of conventional twisted nematic TFT displays: limited viewing angles and low-quality color reproduction. PLS (Plane-to-Line Switching) is a type of IPS screen developed by Samsung, with increased brightness and lower production costs.

Anti-glare helps to reduce the external reflections of light coming from outside the display.

Uses LED backlighting, resulting in better image quality, more vibrant colors and richer blacks.

Colors

A nit is a measurement of the light that a display emits, equal to one candela per square meter. Brighter displays ensure a screen's contents are easy to read, even in sunny conditions.

Contrast ratio is the visual distance between the lightest and the darkest colors that may be reproduced on the display. A high contrast ratio is desired, resulting in richer dark colors and more distinctive color gradation.

Number of colors that a display can accurately reproduce.

Connectivity

Devices with a HDMI or mini HDMI port can transfer high definition video and audio to a display.

More HDMI ports mean that you can simultaneously connect numerous devices, such as video game consoles and set-top boxes.

Devices that have a DVI connector (usually computers and notebooks) can be connected to the TV set.

VGA connector is a widespread connector and is found on many video cards, computer monitors, and some television sets.

The device has a standard memory slot (such as an SD or micro SD card slot) that enables you to extend the built-in internal storage with affordable memory modules, or easily retrieve data, such as photographs, from the memory card.

HP OMEN 24.5in Widescreen Full HD TN LCD Gaming Monitor - Black

    Bit disappointed

I ordered this monitor since I finally wanted to get something that was 144hz. I didn't mind that was refurbished since most refurbs need to be almost similar standards as the new product. I also knew I needed to buy a high speed display port cable so there were no issues. It said the monitor would arrive between March 16th and March 23rd. It arrived at my doorstep on March 26th. I didn't mind it was late, but I was at least expecting it to be on time. The next thing I noticed was 2 large puncture holes in the box (of which I don't believe were from refurbforless but from the shipping company, thanks fedex). When I started to pull the monitor out of the box, I heard a click, only to discover that the plastic casing at the top of the monitor was not fully attached or closed. This was the first thing that I didn't like already. When I pulled it fully out, I grabbed the bottom or base of the monitor/screen and once again it clicked or cracked. This time it would not lock in, but looked and feeled like it was pulled off, and now is curved outward, same goes with the right side of the monitor. From what was described in the product description, and I quote,"Monitor Manufacturer Refurbished- Some monitors have minor scratches on frame/and or base but none". This is neither since there are actually no scratches on the frame or base. Another problem I have is that along the bottom, right, and top part of the frames while the monitor is displayed, there is color bleed or light bleed(photo will show what I mean). I only affects me when in my home screen which is all black, but goes away in chrome or a game, but it shouldn't be there at all. Lastly, it took me ages to try and get it to display 144hz. After I had it set, the games would not play at that, but were still stuck at 60. I got it twice to display at 144hz. The first time, the screen freaked out and some of it would display, some of it wouldn't with patches of lines. The other time was normal after leaving it sit in those settings over night. But days after, games would not display at 144hz, and yes, v-sync was off. The monitor will say it is in the setting, but the games won't get over 60, and these are games that were playing at 130 fps the time it did display. I know this is quite long, but I seem to have lost the draw while many others have won and are pleased with their monitors. I am disappointed with what I was given and will most likely be sending it back. Seems $165.00 was too good to be true.Read full review

    24 hp omen

    Bottom Line

The HP Omen 25 is a solid 24.5″ 1080p 144Hz 1ms gaming monitor. However, there are better alternatives with more features available at this price range.

    3.9

    See Price

The HP Omen 25 is yet another 24.5″ 1080p 144Hz 1ms FreeSync gaming monitor. Here is how it compares to its 24.5″ and 24″ alternatives.

    Image Quality

Just like the AOC G2590FX and the Acer KG251QF, the HP Omen 25 is based on a 24.5″ TN panel by AU Optronics with a peak brightness of 400-nits, a static contrast ratio of 1,000:1, a 144Hz refresh rate, 1080p resolution, 170°/160° viewing angles, and dithered 8-bit color support (6-bit + FRC).

So, you get basically the same viewing experience on all three monitors. The only difference between them is due to diverse calibration out of the box and panel variance.

In comparison to IPS and VA panels, the colors are somewhat washed out. However, when comparing the monitor to older 24″ TN models, there’s a noticeable improvement in color quality.

    Performance

Of course, if you’re a competitive FPS gamer, you probably won’t mind the narrow viewing angles nor the mediocre colors of TN panels since you get a quick 1ms response time speed; so, it’s a fair deal.

In fast-paced games, the HP Omen 25 monitor shows no prominent ghosting nor motion blur of fast-moving objects which allows you to focus on your targets.

In order to get the 1ms response time speed, you will need to adjust the Response Time setting in the OSD (On-Screen Display) menu.

There are five response time settings ranging from Level 1 (Default – 7ms) to Level 5. Since the Level 5 option introduces overshoot, we recommend using either Level 3 or Level 4 for the best results.

The HP Omen 25 input lag performance is excellent as well with only ~5ms of measured delay.

    Features

    Omen By Hp 25 Review

While the HP Omen 25 144Hz display doesn’t have any particularly interesting gaming features such as customizable crosshairs, it does support AMD FreeSync.

The FreeSync technology allows you to synchronize the monitor’s refresh rate with the frame rate of a compatible AMD graphics card.

As a result, you get a variable refresh rate which removes all screen tearing and stuttering without introducing a hefty input lag penalty as VSync does.

The HP Omen 25 FreeSync range is 42-144Hz/FPS (Frames Per Second) over both HDMI and DisplayPort. LFC is supported as well.

FreeSync also works without any issues when using a compatible NVIDIA G-SYNC graphics card.

    Design & Connectivity

    Hp 25 Review

The design is robust and sleek, but it lacks adjustability as you can only tilt the screen by -5°/23° or VESA mount it using the 100x100mm pattern.

Connectivity options include DisplayPort 1.2, two HDMI 1.4 ports, a headphones jack, and a dual-USB 3.0 hub.

    Price & Similar Monitors

The HP Omen 25 price is around $240.

For less money (prices may vary depending on the region), we recommend you get the AOC G2590FX.

Not only is it cheaper, but it also offers more useful features including custom crosshairs, a wider FreeSync range, certified G-SYNC compatibility, and more.

Alternatively, you should have a look at the Acer KG251QF which also has a wider FreeSync range (30-144Hz).

Now, if you want a 144Hz gaming monitor with better image quality, make sure to check out the AOC 24G2 and the BenQ EX2510.

Their response time speed may not be as fast, but it’s more than good enough for casual gaming. Plus, you get much better colors and wider viewing angles.

    Conclusion

While the HP Omen 25 does offer a smooth performance for a responsive and enjoyable fast-paced gaming experience, there are better alternatives for the money out there.

If, however, you happen to catch it on sale and you don’t need the extra features the alternatives offer (integrated speakers, wider FreeSync range, etc), it’s a good gaming monitor overall.
