Wi-Fi Coverage

Router CPU

The Orbi Router of the RBK50 comes equipped with a  Quad-Core 710MHz processor as a central processing unit. Both Orbi Routers of the RBK852 and RBK853 utilize the Quad-Core 2.2 GHz processor as a CPU.

Memory

In terms of memory, the Netgear Orbi RBK50 Whole Home Tri-Band Mesh Wi-Fi System uses a combination of 512MB NAND Flash and 512MB RAM.

The Orbi Satellites of the RBK50 and RBK852 comes with 4 LAN Gigabit Ethernet ports.

The Orbi Satellite of the RBK853 also comes with 4 LAN Gigabit Ethernet ports; since you get two satellites, you get 8 additional LAN Gigabit Ethernet ports in total.

Orbi Router Features

The major difference, in terms of Orbi Router features, is that the RBK50 has 6 high-performance internal antennas with high-powered amplifiers.

The RBK852 and RBK853 come with 8 high-performance internal antennas with high-powered amplifiers.

All three use implicit and explicit Beamforming for the 2.4GHz and 5GHz wireless bands.

The RBK50, RBK852 and RBK853 are also MU-MIMO capable as they will able to provide simultaneous data streaming across multiple devices.

Tri-Band Wi-Fi Speeds

The newer RBK852 and RBK853 Netgear Orbi Whole Home Tri-Band Mesh Wi-Fi Systems are much faster when compared to the RBK50.

When it comes to a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi connection to the internet, there is a 200% increase for the newer models: 400 Mbps for the RBK50 vs. 1200 Mbps for the RBK852 and RBK853.

If you want to use a 5 GHz Wi-Fi connection to the internet, there is a 177.136%  increase for the newer models: 866 Mbps for the RBK50 vs. 2400 Mbps for the RBK852 and RBK853.

For connections between the Orbi Router and Orbi Satellite, there is an 38.4882% increase for the newer models: 1733 Mbps for the RBK50 vs. 2400 Mbps for the RBK852 and RBK853.

Orbi Satellite Features

When it comes to the features of the Orbi Satellite, both the RBK852 and RBK853 have twice the amount of high-performance internal antennas with high-powered amplifiers when compared to the RBK50 (8 versus 4).

Otherwise all three share the same features with implicit and explicit Beamforming for the 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands in addition to being MU-MIMO capable.

Price – Netgear Orbi comparison

Then again, the Nest Wifi costs less than half as much as the Orbi, which sells for a whopping $700, though at time of writing was down to $600 at Best Buy. (In the UK they’re £239 and £710 respectively. The Netgear is not widely available in Australia, but the Nest costs AU$399.) Does that make Nest the better bargain, or is Orbi worth the splurge for the extra horsepower?

The two-pack kit (model number RBK50) starts at $329 and is rated to cover 5,000 square feet. An extra satellite costs $249 for a standard unit and adds another 2,000 square feet of coverage; you can also add the Orbi Voice ($99) as an extension, which not only offers more coverage, but also adds Amazon Alexa voice control and audio.

RBK852 vs RBK752 Netgear Orbi comparison

Netgear is launching a second model of its Orbi mesh router with support for Wi-Fi 6, following up on a high-end model released last fall. This new version, eloquently named the RBK752, is more of a midrange model, offering slightly decreased performance at a slightly decreased price. This is still an Orbi router, though, so it’s still expensive: $450 for a router and satellite. The high-end model, the RBK852, offers the same bundle for $700.

While cheaper, this new model is still a fairly capable mesh system. The RBK752 is a tri-band system, meaning it has a radio dedicated to serving as a wireless link between the units, and it offers four user-facing streams of connectivity with a theoretical maximum speed of 4.2Gbps. That’s down from eight streams and 6Gbps on the RBK852.

Best overall – Netgear Orbi AC1200

Netgear brought the cost down by sticking with Wi-Fi 5, ditching the built-in Alexa speaker that comes with the Orbi Voice and skipping the tri-band approach and the dedicated 5GHz backhaul band that other Orbi systems use to connect each device in the mesh. I wonder if Netgear missed an opportunity by not branding this system as “Orbi Lite.”

I did a double take the first time I saw the price tag for the slimmed down, dual-band version of the Netgear Orbi mesh router system. At $200 for a three-piece setup (or less, if you catch it on sale), it’s a clear value pick — and a dramatic turnaround from the original Netgear Orbi, which was way too expensive at $400 for a two-pack.

It all makes for a less robust mesh system than other Orbi setups, but I hardly noticed in my tests. Among the Wi-Fi 5 systems I’ve tested, the dual-band Netgear Orbi actually notched the fastest top speeds at close range, it kept up with the Nest and Eero in our real-world speed tests and it offered excellent signal strength in the large Smart Home.

Netgear’s app isn’t as clean or intuitive as Nest’s or Eero’s, and the network didn’t seem quite as steady as those two as it steered me from band to band in my tests, but those are quibbles at this price. If you just want something affordable — perhaps to tide you over until you’re ready to make the upgrade to Wi-Fi 6 — then the new Netgear Orbi definitely deserves your consideration.

Good for WiFi 6 – Netgear Orbi AX6000

At a retail price of $700 for a two-pack, the newest, brawniest version of the Netgear Orbi is too expensive to recommend outright — but if you just want the fastest mesh router money can buy, look no further.

With full support for Wi-Fi 6 and a second 5GHz band that serves as a dedicated backhaul connection for the router and its satellites, the powerful system was downright impressive in our tests, with top speeds of nearly 900Mbps at close range in our lab. That’s one of the fastest numbers we’ve ever seen from a mesh router in that test, and it only fell to 666Mbps at a distance of 75 feet — which is still faster than we saw from the Nest Wifi up close, just 5 feet away.

Things got even more impressive when we took the Orbi AX6000 home to test its performance in a real-world setting. With an incoming internet connection of 300Mbps serving as a speed limit, the system returned an average speed throughout the whole home of 289Mbps, including speeds at the farthest point from the router that were 95% as fast as when connecting up close. That’s an outstanding result — no other mesh router I’ve tested in my home comes close.

Again, the problem is the price: $700 is simply too expensive for most folks, especially given that you’ll need a connection of at least 500Mbps in order to notice much of a difference between this system and others we like that cost less than half as much.

Still, if the Orbi AX6000 ever goes on sale, I know I’ll be tempted. In the meantime, know that Netgear just quietly released a less expensive AX4200 version of the Orbi mesh system that costs $450. It’s still a tri-band router that supports Wi-Fi 6, but you don’t get the multigig WAN port that comes with the AX6000 model here. We’ll keep an eye on that one and update this space once we’ve tested it out.

Alternate of Netgear Orbi mesh WiFi

Asus ZenWiFi AX

In fact, the ZenWiFi AX offers the same multigig WAN ports as the Orbi 6, the same dedicated backhaul band to help keep the system transmissions separate from your network traffic, the same ease of setup and steady mesh performance and the same strong performance at range. It even comes in your choice of white or black.

It isn’t quite as fast as the Wi-Fi 6 version of the Netgear Orbi listed above, but the Editors’ Choice Award-winning Asus ZenWiFi AX came awfully close — and at $450 for a two-piece system, it’s a lot easier to afford.

I also appreciated the depth of control in the Asus app, which lets you manage your network and customize that backhaul as you see fit. The price of $450 is still a lot, but this system is strong enough to feel like a worthy upgrade pick for those willing to spend. And, if $450 is a bit too much for your budget, know that there’s a new, smaller version of this system called the Asus ZenWiFi AX Mini. It isn’t as high-powered, but it comes with three devices that all support Wi-Fi 6 for $300, which makes it pretty interesting.

The Netgear Orbi RBK50 AC3000 mesh-router system is out of this world, able to fill a large home with high-speed Wi-Fi. It's a snap to set up and has more range and power than almost any other router. The Orbi's dedicated channel for router-to-extension data traffic helps the system squeeze the maximum throughput for your family's online wants and needs. 

Starting at $329 for a two-pack kit, this is one of the pricier home Wi-Fi kits. But if you have a lot of ground to cover, the premium is well worth it. That's why the Orbi made our list of the best mesh Wi-Fi products.

The two-pack kit (model number RBK50) starts at $329 and is rated to cover 5,000 square feet. None of the other mesh-router systems on the market cost quite as much. Google Wifi costs $299/£329 for three units, while Eero and Luma three packs each cost $400. The Linksys Velop system, possibly the closest match to the Orbi, runs $500/£500 for a three-pack, but you can get two units for $350/£350. However, the Orbi claims greater per-unit area coverage than any of these.

Two other mesh-router systems, the $300 two-piece Amped Wireless Ally Plus and the $350 three-piece Ubiquiti AmpliFi HD, claim coverage areas of a whopping 15,000 square feet and 20,000 square feet, respectively. We're working to confirm those numbers in our lab tests.

Netgear Orbi RBK50 review: Design

Instead of tiny easy-to-stash devices, which you get with the Luma and Google Wifi, the oval-cross-sectioned Netgear Orbi host and extensions are big towers, measuring 8.9 inches x 6.7 inches x 3.1 inches. You can put one in a bookshelf and use it as a bookend, but each Orbi unit is too huge to easily hide.

Like Google Wifi, the Orbi units have color-coded LEDs. When an Orbi device glows white around the oval on top, it's starting up. When it's blue, everything is OK. But if it glows amber, your internet connection is weak; if it's magenta, your connection is gone.

The Orbi transmits Wi-Fi data on three radio-frequency bands. The primary 2.4-GHz and 5-GHz radios provide a theoretical peak throughput of 1.2Gbps of data flow to user devices.

There's a twist, though: Netgear adds a second 5-GHz, 1.7Gbps radio that's exclusively dedicated to the backhaul, the data being transmitted from the router Orbi unit to the satellite Orbis and back again. Because of this side channel, the main links between the Orbi units and your devices stay strong and fast.

To support this configuration, each Orbi device has six high-performance amplified antennas around its perimeter. There's also a Bluetooth radio and antenna, but they're dormant for now.

Although they look the same, the Orbi's router unit and satellite units are not interchangeable. You can't randomly decide which unit should be the router and which should be the repeater.

The router can handle up to three satellites, but each satellite communicates directly with the host router in a hub-and-spoke arrangement, rather than in a true mesh topology that would let data pass from one satellite to another. 

Update: This is no longer the case, and the Orbi RBK50 has had true mesh capability since the firmware was changed in late 2018. Newer models in the Orbi line have all been true mesh systems.

Each Orbi's backside has a power input, an on/off button and four gigabit Ethernet ports. On the router, one port is yellow and connects to your broadband modem. You can use the other LAN ports to connect to printers, network-attached storage drives and stationary PCs.

There are also buttons to reset a device and to synchronize the router with extra satellites. (Orbi units sold in packs come out of the box synchronized.) Each Orbi sports a USB 2.0 port as well, but, like the Bluetooth radios, they're awaiting activation by a future software update.

Netgear Orbi RBK50 review: Performance

Like Google Wifi, the Orbi is a 2x2 router, and can handle two simultaneous streams of data to properly configured devices, per frequency band. (The dedicated backhaul channel uses 4x4 radios.) But the Orbi adds the latest MU-MIMO (multi-user, multiple input and multiple output) Wi-Fi technology for sending focused data streams to several devices at the same time.

With the Orbi router 30 feet and two walls away, the Orbi extension projected 429.1 Mbps to a laptop one floor above it — more than double Google Wifi's performance.

Each Orbi device has Qualcomm's IPQ4019 Wi-Fi control chip and radio as well as a 710-MHz quad-core ARM-based processor with 512MB of RAM and 4GB of solid-state storage space. A QCA9984 chip controls the backhaul data channel.

Make no mistake about it: All of this makes the Orbi a powerful beast. Using IxChariot software, Purch Labs' real-world testing showed that a single Orbi router could deliver a combined average throughput of 552.1 megabits per second (Mbps) at 5 feet. It was 19 percent faster at this distance than Google Wifi, 34 percent faster than the Linksys Velop and 50 percent faster than the Ubiquiti AmpliFi HD.

The Orbi's performance dropped off with distance, but not as rapidly as the Google Wifi's. The throughput averaged 510.9 Mbps at 15 feet, 447.1 Mbps at 50 feet and 371.4 Mbps at 100 feet.

To put this in perspective, the Orbi's 100-foot throughput was about the same as the Ubiquiti AmpliFi HD's 15-foot speed. The Linksys Velop averaged more power at long range, but its test results were less consistent than the Orbi's. (These distance tests were conducted along a line of sight.)

At 150 feet, the Orbi router still delivered 229.1 Mbps of throughput, nearly seven times Google Wifi's 33.8 Mbps. (To be fair, the AmpliFi HD had very similar throughput at 150 feet, and the Velop had 26 percent more.) With such results, the Orbi's claim of 2,000 square feet of coverage per unit might be an underestimation.

In the Purch Labs material-penetration tests, the Orbi router's transmissions were powerful enough to punch through a metal-frame wall, a ceiling and a soundboarded wall with little drop-off. (The soundboard figure actually improved throughput by about 8 percent; we're not including regular drywall because it has little effect.)

Google Wifi and the AmpliFi HD had losses of even smaller percentages when penetrating walls and ceilings, but the Orbi's better starting point put it ahead overall.

In a 100-foot, single-line test, placing the Orbi extension halfway between the router and the Purch Labs laptop boosted throughput by 28 percent. By contrast, the Velop's throughput stayed about the same, while the AmpliFi HD's and Google Wifi's throughputs dropped about 25 percent each. Again, in absolute terms, the Orbi's overall speed advantage blew away the competition.

The Orbi also did well in complicated, 3D tests, with results very similar to the Linksys Velop's. With the router 30 feet and two walls away, the Orbi extension projected 429.1 Mbps to a laptop one floor above it — more than double Google Wifi's average, and two and a half times more than with the Orbi router alone. Moving the laptop further away decreased the throughput, but the Orbi extension helped greatly.

In a three-story home with lots of thick walls, the Orbi stayed connected with client devices as far as 125 feet from the router. That's the best score we've seen among recent routers, and was 20 feet and 35 feet farther than the Google Wifi and AmpliFi HD routers managed, respectively.

Signal Strength, Router Only

The Orbi network easily covered a 3,500-square foot home; with the router placed in the basement and the extension on the main floor, the signal easily reached to the top floor. The Speedtest.net broadband test pegged the Orbi as delivering between 50 Mbps and 95 Mbps of download speed from a 100-Mbps broadband connection.

Signal Strength, Router and Extension

With its MU-MIMO technology, the Orbi served several devices simultaneously. It stood up well to our informal saturation test, in which we played videos on Surface Pro 3 and iPad Pro tablets as a Samsung Tab Pro S moved data on and off a network-attached storage system and a MacBook Air played an online radio station. The video and audio came through on all devices without a skip, stutter or drop-out.

Netgear Orbi RBK50 review: Setup and support

Netgear has taken the lead in the race to create a home Wi-Fi network system that all but sets itself up. The devices come pre-paired, and the installation doesn't require knowledge of IP addresses, Ethernet or encryption. You don't even need to install a mobile app.

Setup can be done using a PC or Mac connected via Ethernet to the Orbi router, or via a smartphone or tablet connected via Wi-Fi. Just type orbilogin.com into a computer web browser, or download the Orbi app for iOS or Android. You can also use the Netgear Genie app, which is available for Windows and Mac as well as Android and iOS.

Netgear has taken the lead in the race to create a home Wi-Fi network system that all but sets itself up.

After Orbi's software does a network check, the router will be set up. Power up the Orbi satellite in the place where you want it to stay, and let the router scan for it. You may have to move the satellite closer to the router.

Then change the network name, access the password and administrative passwords (you'll absolutely want to do this for security's sake), and restart the devices. It took us 10 minutes to create a fully operating network that filled a suburban house with Wi-Fi.

Netgear includes a one-year warranty for the Orbi system, but only three months of tech support. The Orbi support section on Netgear's website includes not only startup tips and videos, but also  a downloadable manual that explains everything you can do with the Orbi. Netgear has technicians standing by 24 hours a day to help with a phone call, online chat or email. You can also connect with the help desk through the mobile app.

Netgear Orbi RBK50 review: Customization

All the Orbi mobile-app screens use portrait mode, and the app's functions are limited to the basics, without even a network-speed monitor. (Netgear told us that it will soon add more capabilities to the Orbi app.) For more fine-grained control and diagnostic information, you'll have to use the desktop browser local interface or the Netgear Genie software, which applies to many Netgear routers but has many more features than the embryonic Orbi app.

The Orbi app Dashboard shows the network name and password, but you can obscure the password. The Device Info screen shows the router's firmware version, but to update the firmware, you'll need to go to the bottom of the main Dashboard page.

By contrast, the browser interface is more detailed, with a network speed and usage monitor. It also lets you set up a guest network so that visitors can access the internet from their laptops or smartphones without using your main network's access password. (Some security experts recommend putting smart-home devices on the guest network as well.)

You can also do more-technical things, such as adjust the router's maximum transmission unit, perform port forwarding and configure IPV6 addressing, but you can't adjust the Orbi's transmission strength or channel width. Nor can you assign static IP addresses, although the Orbi supports DHCP IP address reservations.

Netgear Orbi RBK50 review: Smarthome integration

Since the Orbi first shipped early in 2017, a firmware update has added Amazon Alexa compatibility. To use Alexa, you'll need to create a Netgear account and install the Netgear Genie mobile app on a smartphone or tablet. For now, Alexa commands are limited to turning the guest network on and off, rebooting the router, and reading out the Wi-Fi settings. (Alexa does not yet work with Netgear's line of Arlo security cameras.)

Netgear Orbi RBK50 review: Security and parental controls

The Orbi ships with a semi-random network name and a unique alphanumeric administrative passcode that should be safe enough to use during the short setup routine. Still, you should change both the name and code to something more personal as soon as possible.

While the Orbi apps don't let you quickly pause the internet connection for dinner or family time, you can do so with the browser interface or the Genie app. (Netgear engineers are working on adding this ability to the Orbi apps.)

To make the most of Orbi's parental controls, you should use the Netgear Genie app for Windows, Mac, iOS and Android, and create an OpenDNS account. That way, you can choose to block specific websites or let Netgear take care of the details by adjusting the overall filtering level between none and high.

The Orbi uses the WPA2 security standard to encrypt Wi-Fi transmissions and protect your data and network, and supports the somewhat weaker WPA standard. (The old WEP standard is not supported, so you won't be able to connect some PCs that were made before 2005.)

We aren't thrilled that the Orbi supports the Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS) configuration protocol, which is anything but protected. But WPS does let people uncomfortable with mobile apps and passwords set up and use an Orbi system just by pressing a few buttons.

Like most mesh-router systems, the Orbi automatically updates its own firmware. (Netgear told us that the updates are encrypted and verified.) Few standard routers do this, which leaves them vulnerable to attackers, so it's good to see this trend.

Firmware updates in 2018 have added more fine-tuned parental controls with the Circle with Disney app. This app allows parents to set up profiles for each member of the family, complete with age-appropriate content filtering, time-limits for online use, and curfew settings to cut off connectivity when it’s time to be done for the night. (We mostly liked Circle with Disney when we reviewed the standalone device. The app should provide similar functionality.)

Netgear Orbi RBK50 review: Verdict

Netgear's Orbi RBK50 AC3000 blasts off with not only the best-performing Wi-Fi router-extenders kit, but also the easiest setup. The Orbi's dedicated mobile apps are rudimentary, but both the browser-based interface and Netgear's generic Genie app have more options. It's expensive, and its security could use some improvement, but for now, the Orbi is the mesh router to beat.

If you´re going to Netgear Orbi system, you get a kit which consists of the main router and one or more satellite. These satellites need to be connected to the main router via Wi-Fi backhaul. But what exactly does the AC mean?

We already have a detailed article here – What Router AC Ratings Mean? –  but if a short explanation is enough for you then… If your router supports the latest 802.11ac networking standard, then it has AC in its name. The number after the AC refers to the sum of all the speeds that can theoretically be delivered by each band.

So, with this knowledge, let´s look at the difference between AC2200 and AC3000.

  • Netgear Orbi AC2200: Tri-band router with Wi-Fi speed up to 2.2Gbps (866 + 866 + 400Mbps)
  • Netgear Orbi AC3000: Tri-band router with Wi-Fi speed up to 3.0Gbps (1733 + 867 + 400Mbps)

In this context, the Orbi mesh system with AC3000 should be better. Each satellite is connected with a 5GHz band and can reach 1733Mbps, so it’s faster more AC2200. There is a catch. For usual home use and daily networking, the AC2200 is good enough, and it´s much cheaper.

In the near future, when your home will be full of various smart devices, the mesh system with an AC3000 rating will be an ideal choice.

That really depends on factors such as the size of the space you need reliable coverage for and personal preferences. While the RBK50 Netgear Orbi WiFi model is top for speed it isn’t really essential unless you have a lot of space to provide cover for. For smaller homes where there’s no call for satellite LAN Ports then the RBK30 offers a great service for the cheapest price tag. Price wise the difference between RBK30 and RBK40 is much narrower than that between those and the RBK50 version.

Netgear Orbi WiFi 6 Mesh vs Netgear Orbi WiFi 5 Mesh - New Best Mesh WiFi

Netgear is launching a second model of its Orbi mesh router with support for Wi-Fi 6, following up on a high-end model released last fall. This new version, eloquently named the RBK752, is more of a midrange model, offering slightly decreased performance at a slightly decreased price. This is still an Orbi router, though, so it’s still expensive: $450 for a router and satellite. The high-end model, the RBK852, offers the same bundle for $700.

While cheaper, this new model is still a fairly capable mesh system. The RBK752 is a tri-band system, meaning it has a radio dedicated to serving as a wireless link between the units, and it offers four user-facing streams of connectivity with a theoretical maximum speed of 4.2Gbps. That’s down from eight streams and 6Gbps on the RBK852.

The Orbi system has consistently received high marks for its reliability and performance. It comes with some downsides, though: the mesh nodes are significantly larger than those from competitors like Eero and Nest, making them harder to hide around the house. These particular models are also a lot more expensive: you can get a Wi-Fi 5 mesh system for half the price, though it’d be a less future-proofed.

Netgear is formally launching the RBK752 today, though it’s been rolling out to stores over the last month or two. Additional satellites will be available for $280, and there’ll be a $600 bundle with a router and two satellites. An important note for existing Orbi owners: you can mix and match Wi-Fi 6 Orbi units — so the RBK852 can connect to the RBK752 — but you can’t link one of these newer Orbi units to the older Wi-Fi 5 Orbi units. That won’t matter for new buyers, but it means existing owners won’t be able to improve their system by adding in a newer unit.

In addition to the new Orbi model, Netgear also recently launched a new Nighthawk router designed to sit in the middle of its lineup. The RAX50 is a six-stream Wi-Fi 6 router with support for full-width 160MHz streams for higher performance. It’s available now for $299.

Therefore, people usually buy a kit when starting out and for implementing a whole-home WiFi mesh system.

Netgear names the “Kit” models as RBKxx with the letter K showing that this is a Kit system having one Router and one or more Satellites.

Our Recommendation

  • If your Internet connection is lower than 150Mbps and also you don’t have much internal home network traffic (i.e sharing files within your home, streaming video within the home network etc) then go with RBK40 model.
  • If your Internet connection is more than 150Mbps and you also have some heavy internal traffic requirements (sharing files, streaming etc) then we suggest you to go with RBK50 model.

RBK23 Vs RBK50

The RBK23 is a newer and more economical model launched by Netgear to cover the needs of medium to large sized houses and with some reductions in hardware to lower the price.

The main hardware differences of the RBK23 compared to RBK50 (which is the best selling kit) are the following:

  • Smaller size: (5.6 x 2.4 x 6.6 in)  compared to (6.4 x 3.1 x 8.0 in).
  • Fewer Internal Antennas: The RBK23 has 4 internal antennas compared to 6 antennas of RBK50.
  • Fewer Wired Ethernet Ports: The RBK23 has 2 Ethernet Ports while the RBK50 has 4.
  • Wireless Backhaul speed: The RBK23 has 866Mbps backhaul speed compared to 1733Mbps of the RBK50

Other than the above hardware differences, the main features of the RBK50 are also supported by RBK23 as well (such as Tri-band WiFi, wireless backhaul on 5Ghz band, beamforming, excellent speed performance and coverage etc).

So if you want to save some money and you don’t care much about the reduced hardware specs, then the RBK23 is a value for money product.

Although the RBK33 has a total of 3 wifi units compared to RBK50 (which has 2 units), the main limitation of the RBK33 is that the satellites are wall-plug units. This has two main disadvantages in my opinion:

  • Wall-plug satellite units do not have LAN Ethernet wired ports.
  • Wall-plug units don’t offer much flexibility regarding the location to place them in the house since they must be plugged on a power outlet. Usually power outlets are hidden behind furniture and are located lower on the wall. This might limit the area coverage of the system.

On the other hand, the wall-plug satellites of the RBK33 are slim profile and much smaller compared to RBK50. You just plug them on a power outlet for easy expansion of the mesh network.

RBK53 is currently the biggest and most powerful Orbi kit you can buy. RBK53 is basically the same hardware as RBK50 but it has 1 router + 2 satellites instead of 1 router + 1 satellite of the RBK50.

Therefore, the RBK53 will have the same stellar performance as the RBK50 but with much larger house area coverage. It is designed for very large houses with thick walls (up to 7500 sq ft areas, more than 2 floors etc) but its more expensive than the RBK50  model.

Ofcourse you can buy an RBK50 for now and add an extra satellite later on if you still need to cover a bigger area. However, the cost of buying the 50 model and then buying an extra satellite later on will be higher instead of buying the 53 model kit.

The only difference is that the 53S model includes a free 1-year subscription to NETGEAR Armor which is based on Bitdefender Total Security antivirus engine for AV and cyberattack protection. The license covers all of your home devices (smartphones and computers) no matter how many you have.

Orbi AC2200 Vs AC3000 Description

I have written an article in the past explaining the meaning of the “AC” specification in the new IEEE 802.11ac standard.

As explained in the article above, the number after the AC spec (AC2200 or AC3000) represents the combined maximum speed of all wireless frequency bands of the device.

In summary:

AC2200: This has 3 frequency bands (1 band at 2.4 Ghz and 2 bands at 5Ghz). The max wifi speed supported on the 2.4 Ghz band is 400Mbps and the max wifi speed supported on the 5 Ghz bands is 866Mbps (thus combined data speed is 400+866+866 = around 2200 Mbps).

AC3000: This also has 3 frequency bands (1 band at 2.4 Ghz and 2 bands at 5Ghz). The max wifi speed supported on the 2.4 Ghz band is 400Mbps and the max wifi speed supported on the 5 Ghz bands is 866Mbps and 1733Mbps (thus combined data speed is 400+866+1733 = 3000 Mbps).

Does Orbi AC2200 models work with AC3000 models?

I get a lot of question about mixing up various Orbi models and specifically mixing AC2200 with AC3000 models. The short answer is that you CAN mix models together with no problem. The only issue is that if you mix an AC2200 unit with an AC3000 unit, the whole system will drop to AC2200 max speed.

For example, assume you have an RBR50 router which is AC3000. You can buy an RBW30 wall-plug satellite (which is AC2200) and connect it to the RBR50. However, the entire network will drop to AC2200.
