If you like friendly, laid-back folks, then Salt Lake City is a great place to visit. Located on the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, the city appeals to many different types of visitors, who are interested in everything from its outdoor activities to its pioneering roots, Mormon influence, and urban landscapes.

There are many things to do in the city as well as on its outskirts. It's a great place to treat yourself to craft beer and award-winning cuisine, or see some beautiful vistas provided by the Oquirrh and the Wasatch mountain ranges.

RV rentals in Salt Lake City allow you to have a lot of fun and relaxation, whether you like mountain biking and hiking, learning about your family’s history, or simply kicking back and enjoying the view.

Popular RV Destinations in Salt Lake City

Temple Square

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (LDS) owns Temple Square in the heart of downtown Salt Lake City. It includes the Salt Lake Temple, Salt Lake Tabernacle, Salt Lake Assembly Hall, the Seagull Monument, and two visitor centers. It took 40 years to complete the temple, and the area is the hub of the city.

Between three and five million local, national, and international visitors go to Temple Square each year, making it Utah's most-visited attraction. There are several free tours, including the Pioneer History Walking Tour. The temple itself is sacred to the LDS church and is not open for tours.

The square features some beautiful gardens and landscaping, and over the holiday season draws numerous visitors for its twinkling light displays. Many people also visit its Family History Library to trace their roots before dining at its various restaurants, including the Lion House Pantry and the Roof Restaurant.

Red Butte Garden

Open publicly year-round, the Red Butte Garden and Arboretum is located next to the University of Utah campus. There are 21 acres of gardens as well as five miles of hiking trails. The community-funded garden has a variety of plant collections, nearly 500,000 blooming bulbs, and award-winning gardens, including a huge collection of daffodils.

The garden hosts several concerts during the summer as well as educational programs. Open publicly since 1985, over 200,000 guests visit each year. It's a go-to, family-friendly spot for relaxation and exercise. It's also frequently used for weddings and other special events.

Liberty Park and Tracy Aviary

Liberty Park has 80 acres with walking and jogging paths, tennis courts, paddle boats, a swimming pool, amusement park, a pavilion, and more. You can also play horseshoes, volleyball, basketball, and bocce ball. If you enjoy picnicking, the park has five grills on its east side.

It's one of the city's top family-friendly locations and features the Tracy Aviary, where you can see several types of birds, such as eagles, swans, and pelicans. The Tracy Aviary is one of the biggest and oldest of just two free-standing aviaries in the United States. Exhibits include the owl forest, treasures of the rainforest, and Amazon adventure.

Great Salt Lake

The Great Salt Lake is just 20 minutes from Salt Lake City. Besides the Great Lakes, the Great Salt Lake is the biggest lake in the country. People love sunbathing on the white sand beaches at Antelope Island State Park and swimming in its buoyant water. The lake is also a wildlife paradise with a variety of birds, bison, deer, elk, and antelope.

There are two marinas, and you can book a boat dinner cruise through Gonzo Boat Rentals and Tours. The lake is also a great place for paddleboarding, kayaking, and other water sports.

Events and Entertainment in Salt Lake City

Sundance Film Festival

The Sundance Film Festival is the nation's largest independent film festival. Filmmakers are awarded in several categories, such as documentary, drama, and short film. The festival also features multimedia installations as well as other types of performances.

In addition to watching movies, film lovers can attend panel discussions, filmmaker conversations, and musical performances. In 2016, three of its films wound up receiving Academy Award nominations.

The festival has launched the careers of numerous filmmakers over the years, including Quentin Tarantino, Steven Soderbergh, Robert Rodriguez, and Darran Aronofsky. The festival is internationally recognized for its influence in the industry, and if you love the movies, you shouldn't pass up a chance to attend the January event.

Oktoberfest

Oktoberfest has been a Utah tradition since 1973. Thousands of people attend the event, one of Utha's largest, in Snowbird, which is about 35 minutes outside of the city. Top 10 Natural Attractions near Salt Lake City

Salt Lake City is one of America’s most popular starting points for extended RV road trips. It is where many visitors to the Southwest arrive by plane, pick up their RV hire in Salt Lake City, and head out for an unforgettable journey through Utah’s desert, mountain, and canyon landscapes.

While Salt Lake City has its fair share of urban attractions, the city’s major drawcard is its relative proximity to several of the greatest national parks in the USA. From Salt Lake City, you can be at one of Utah’s “Might Five” national parks in just a few hours, while there are several state parks, national monuments, and other parks across the state as well.

These are our personal ten favourite natural attractions you can visit on a Salt Lake City RV rental road trip.

Arches National Park

Home to the world’s densest concentration of natural rock arches—more than 2,000 of them, including Delicate Arch and Landscape Arch—Arches National Park is one of the most iconic parks in the United States.

Located just outside of Moab, a popular RV road trip destination, the park has a spectacular scenic drive and offers amazing hiking, rock climbing, stargazing, camping and horseback riding.

Bryce Canyon National Park

Preserving a breath-taking natural amphitheatre filled with rock formations called hoodoos, Bryce Canyon National Park is one of America’s most mesmerizing national parks.

A scenic road leads to several viewpoints, while numerous hiking trails lead down into the amphitheatre and through the hoodoos. The park is especially beautiful at sunrise and sunset, so consider setting up camp for a night or two.

Canyonlands National Park

Located near Moab and Arches National Park, Canyonlands National Park is perhaps one of the region’s most underrated parks.

Made up of four different districts—Island in the Sky, the Needles, the Maze, and the Colorado and Green Rivers district—Canyonlands National Park is a vast wilderness of canyons, mesas, cliffs, and plateaus. The Island in the Sky is the most accessible area, home to a visitor centre, a scenic drive, and several wonderful hiking trails.

Dead Horse Point State Park

This jaw-dropping state park overlooks the Colorado River and a part of Canyonlands National Park—you will pass it on the road towards Canyonlands’ Island in the Sky District.

The park has several scenic viewpoints, a campground that can accommodate tent campers and RV travellers, as well as hiking and mountain biking trails. Dead Horse Point is famous as the setting of the final scene in the movie Thelma & Louise.

Capitol Reef National Park

Bisected by Highway 24, Capitol Reef National Park is an accessible park in the heart of southern Utah. It is the middle one of Utah’s five national parks, a place characterized by huge rock formations and slot canyons, sandstone domes and towering monoliths.

The park also preserves a Mormon pioneer settlement known as Fruita, which as orchards and barns, as well as Native American petroglyphs.

Dinosaur National Monument

One of the world’s top paleontological hotspots, Dinosaur National Monument is on the eastern slopes of the Uinta Mountains, on the Utah/Colorado border. The park encompasses the confluence of the Yampa and Green Rivers, rugged canyon, and desert landscapes, as well as more than 800 paleontological sites.

Major attractions are the Quarry Exhibit Hall, Harpers Corner and Echo Park. Additionally, the monument is a designated International Dark Sky Park, so it is worth camping here for a couple of days.

Monument Valley

Arguably the most famous desert landscape in the USA, Monument Valley is on the border of Utah and Arizona. It is characterized by massive red-sandstone buttes, which are a popular backdrop in Western movies.

The entire valley is part of the Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park, which has a magnificent 17-mile Valley Drive. This is a must-visit destination on a Salt Lake City RV rental road trip in this part of America.

Natural Bridges National Monument

Located in south-eastern Utah, the Natural Bridges National Monument protects three huge natural arches in the White Canyon. All three bridges have Native American names: Owachomo, Kachina and Sipapu, the latter of which is the second largest natural bridge in Utah.

You can explore the park on a 9-mile scenic drive with overlooks, while hiking trails lead down to each bridge.

Zion National Park

One of America’s most visited national parks, Zion National Park is centred on Zion Canyon, a strikingly colourful canyon of the Virgin River. Flanked by sheer cliffs, which are home to hanging gardens and rock pools, the canyon offers world-class hiking—Angels Landing and Observation Point are famous hikes—and rock climbing.

There are two large campgrounds for RV rentals just inside the park, near the entrance in Springdale.

Bonneville Salt Flats

A sprawling 30,000-acre plain of hard salt crust west of the Great Salt Lake, the Bonneville Salt Flats are one of Utah’s most remarkable natural attractions. The Salt Flats are what remains of the prehistoric Bonneville Lake, home to areas that are so salty no vegetation grows there.

The renowned Bonneville Speedway is in the western part of the salt flats, perfectly flat and the location where many land speed records were set.
