Tropical Storm Fred soaked much of the Caribbean from the Virgin Islands to Cuba, then left a trail of flooding and tornadoes in the East after its Florida landfall.

The sixth named storm of the 2021 Atlantic hurricane season began as a disturbance approaching the Windward Islands, which prompted tropical storm watches on August 9.

Potential Tropical Cyclone Six - a designation given to a system forecast to become a depression or storm - finally become Tropical Storm Fred late on August 10 as it was centered just south of Puerto Rico.

Fred, then tracked across Hispaniola, dumping flooding rain across parts of Haiti and the Dominican Republic.

After tracking near or over parts of Cuba, Tropical Depression Fred degenerated briefly into a tropical wave over the southeast Gulf of Mexico.

Winds gusted 50 to 65 mph along parts of the Florida Panhandle. A gust to 68 mph was observed at the Apalachicola Airport and gusts of 73 mph were reported near the Gulf Coast at Eastport and High Bluff.

There were several reports of trees downed in southeastern Alabama, with wind gusts over 40 mph. Dothan, Alabama, measured a gust of 45 mph.

More than 7 inches of rain was measured in Panama City, Florida. An apartment complex in Lynn Haven, Florida, flooded and displaced several first flood residents. Widespread flooding was reported in Southport, Florida, where just over 9 inches of rain fell. Vernon, Florida, reported 11.34 inches of rainfall from Fred.

But the most destructive flooding occurred in western North Carolina.

Tropical Storm Mindy, A Quick Soaker for the Florida Panhandle, South Georgia (RECAP)

Mindy formed late Wednesday afternoon when Doppler radar out of the Florida Panhandle detected a well-defined circulation less than 100 miles west-southwest of Apalachicola, Florida. The tropical storm then made landfall with 45 mph winds a few hours later at 8:15 p.m. CDT on St. Vincent Island, Florida, or just west-southwest of Apalachicola.

Winds gusted to 55 mph on St. George Island, Florida, when Mindy made landfall Wednesday evening. Stronger wind gusts from Mindy downed several trees and powerlines in the Tallahassee area overnight.

Mindy swept off the Southeast Coast by Thursday afternoon and weakened into a tropical depression. Rain fell from the coastal Carolinas to northeast Florida as the system moved away and a cold front pushed through the region.

Mindy Forms in Gulf; Parts of North Florida Under Tropical Storm Warning

image

Tropical Storm Mindy has formed in the Gulf of Mexico and will move ashore in the Florida Panhandle tonight.

A tropical storm warning has been issued for the Florida Gulf coast from Mexico Beach to Steinhatchee. This means tropical storm conditions are expected in these areas, in this case, within the next 6 to 12 hours.

While tropical storm force winds are possible near the coast, the main threat with this system is locally heavy rain in parts of northern Florida, south Georgia and southern South Carolina through Thursday that could lead to local flash flooding. Isolated tornadoes are also possible.
