Southern MBLooking for a backup tandem and found one at an auction sale not to far away.

What are the good and bad points about the cat 3406B engine? Don't know much about cat only had cummins. What would one expect to have for horsepower from that engine?

Also not sure about the gmc/white what parts availability would be like. I suppose as long as the cab is in good shape the rest of it should be pretty common but can't say for sure. Thanks.

North west MNThe 3406b is a real good engine. Not great on fuel but lots of tourqe. Most are set from 350 to 425 and pull like a tractor.. after looking at your link that cat engine would play with that truck I thought it was a semi planning o 80,000 pounds

Eastern Washington3406B one of the best cat engines ever made, should be at least 350 on up to 425hp, a true million mile motor. Not a fan of gmc/white, they can be a little different, although I've never had one personally. Have 4 3406B's and drivers will chose them over a cummins any day.

I hope the 3406B is as good as they say it is just finishing up setting up a tandem fld 120 and 3406B with 20' box myself.

Sparta, WII have 2 B models, they are a good motor.

TexasI've had a few and think they are as dependable as any engine on the road. The 3406B had the kinks out of it and man will it lug at low RPM, especially if you have been driving a Detroit of any stripe.

I've also had the White/GMC and it isn't the most desired truck. If it's cheap and "clean" then it will give you some service, but expect to be frustrated with parts availability and a lot of small irritations.

central albertaWe've got a Ford L9000, 20ft box with the 3406B, like other's have said, it's a good motor, lot's of power for a tandem grain truck. I thought that our's was only rated at 310HP, I might have to go have another look! Good engine, but I still think our 855's in our tractors might be a little better.

bad on fuel. GREAT otherwise. guys just hate white gmc because all volvos are the same. but trucks are trucks. id much rather have a white gmc in good shape with a b model cat thats not worn out than a shakin worn out 379 thats been pulling an end dump or trash trailer with a 855 n14 that has a ecm thats acting up.

My 14.0l detroits with egr delete and 12.7 heads have 855 cubes... does that count??
3406b beats 855 cummins 99 times out of 100, and im no cat guy!

EC North DakotaI have same 93 volvo with a L-10. Guys that drive for me like the way the Volvo handles, rides. They would rather drive it than the 9400 IHC i have.

central albertaNo, I don't own a dodge cummins. Our 2 4wd tractors have the 855 and neither have given us a lick of trouble. We've owned the own for 22 years and the other for 13 years. Maybe in a truck application they don't work as well....? Just saying that's my experience, but thanks for the usual attitude you get off the internet.

sorry bud, didnt mean to have attitude! really didnt!... I think the tractor truck comparison is a bit unfair. It's hard to beat a big cam in a red and yellow versatile or a non emissions 855 n14 in newer big 4x4... I cant argue that! sure beats a big 4x4 with a cranked up 8.3 or something... i often wonder though if they had ever put a mechanical 3406b or a 5ek E model/6nz c15 in a big 4x4 newer than the steiger 4 if it wouldnt have quite the following... seems like saying that a 855 is "better" becasue its the best in big 4x4's isnt valid (even though its true!) because compared to what else you could get in a tractor, it is the best... but with trucks things were different! i just talk to alot of guys on a daily basis who drive trucks with nicer newer engines and talk about how great a 855 big cam 4 or n14 red top is.... but they havent driven one in 15 years and didnt pay the fuel bill or pay to change the fuel pump on the mech or the ecm on the n14s every couple thou or to have them all inframed at 600k... take theyre new truck that drives like a car and has computerized cruise control and a full diagnostic platform away from them and give them a big cam four and theyll quit you... then again a B model cat isnt much different in that regard! So maybe your right! :-)

Essex County, extreme SW Ontario,Pluses to the Cat,,, TONS of torque, lots of power, and very durable. Minuses--- HEAVY, can be hard on fuel, expensive to rebuild .

WiThe B model will be fun to drive, simple to fix and worth its weight when you are done with the truck. Like all kitties it will cost a lot to fix though, and that motor was thirsty.

White gmc parts can be found at Volvo dealers. Like all Volvo/Mack parts they will be very expensive though.

Just remember, if you hear it ticking shut it off NOW. They don't usually wear out slow. If I remember right once in a while the wrist pins will come loose. Keep the rpm down where it is supposed to be. They don't like 2800 rpm very long.


Cleveland, MS. Own small farm near Booneville, MSI put about 400K on a 3406B in a Navistar 9400 back in the late '80s and early '90s when it was new. It had a computer and was set at 400 hp. Another truck in the fleet had a mechanical 3406B. Mine would get to the top of the hill faster with a bigger load. It had very good low end torque. Ran with several different 60 Series Detroits of same hp rating and it would out pull every one of them. Mine was set up with a 9 speed with 27% overdrive in 9th and 3.90 rears. After that I ran 60 Series Detroits that were rated 430 hp and they wouldn't pull what the Cat did. I know because I ran the same roads with the same loads. IMO it's a great engine. As far as the VWGMC is concerned, personally, I don't care for them, but that's just me. I would drive one if I got hungry enough and it was the only option:-)

They are governed are 2100 so a 3406 will never see rpm above 2100

They are governed are 2100 so a 3406 will never see rpm above 2100
