Also nothing in front of that seat by the floor..??? Not possible to recline the back of the seat…. What? This is my first car doing that. I don’t care what they say to us, it’s their responsibility and a deadly risk drive this car with the passenger light on and a passenger in it and been involved in an accident. This happens with the car on, but parked, stopped waiting for a light to change, moving, going forward, going reverse, and is intermittent.”

“On straight highway sometimes will give a jerk to the right. Had vehicle in for issue they found steering shaft bolt loose. They retorqued to spec. Drove to florida still has same issues. “Occasionally when i slowly accelerate from a stop, as when i pull into a driving lane from a parking lot a stop sign, the car will move a few feet and then stop. The engine will still be turning approx. 2000 rpm but the car will not move . When i apply the accelerator the rpm does not change and the car still will not move. After anywhere from 3-5 seconds the car will accelerate normally. Otherwise the car performs normally and there is no hesitation at higher speeds. As a result, i am sitting helpless in a traffic land with cars bearing down on me. S far we have not been hit. I have been unable to replicate this problem and it may occur a few times in one day or nit for several days. I took it to my local subaru dealer and they were unable to duplicate the problem on a test drive. However, a service writer with the same model did describe a similar experience. The service dept. Ran diagnostic tests and said that everything is normal. Subaru customer service said that unless they can duplicate the problem there is nothing they can do. When i googled this problem i found several similar complaints involving several subaru models and also that subaru is aware of the problem but apparently has not found a solution.”

The factory windshield was replaced at 11,670 miles on 12/17/2018 and was replaced with subaru oem glass. Now at 24,000 miles the replacement windshield has cracked from a minor rock strike. “before entering freeway, at low speed, a crack appeared on the windshield. Seems to stem from the lower black strip on the windshield. There is a small impact point stemming from the black strip along the lower side of the windshield and the crack immediately grew to about 10” vertically upward from that. The next day, the crack curved and grew another 10-15” in length across the passenger side. I did not notice anything impact the windshield. “i have had this car since april 2018. During my first week of ownership a small rock hit my windshield while driving on the highway and put a crack in it i got repaired. Car Complaints keeps a list of the most severe issues that are popping up in cars in the last 90 days. This trend list currently shows a disturbing trend for Subie fans. Of the top 10 most severe issues, four of them belong to the 2018 Forester, and one of them belongs to the 2015 Forester. This may purely be a coincidence, and it may ultimately mean nothing – or it could be a troubling sign of what’s to come.
That said, fortunately for Subie fans, while Car Complaints said that these were the most severe new complaints in the last 90 days, Car Complaints also said that there aren’t that many overall complaints about the 2018 Forester.
For example, overall, Car Complaints said that the 2014 Forester was the worst model year, and the 2015 Forester had the most complaints. The 2018 Forester is far behind those two model years in terms of overall issues, but it may catch up soon.
The 2018 Subaru Forester’s expensive new issues
The most costly new problem for the 2018 Forester, according to Car Complaints, had to do with its compressor breaking. With just 43,000 miles on the odometer, a 2018 Forester owner complained that the car’s warranty “definitely falls short of the quality of the vehicle and the repairs needed so early on.” Repairing this issue cost the owner $1,000, and, as a result, Car Complaints rated it as a “pretty bad” issue.
Another costly new issue for the 2018 Forester was the fact that an owner reported their car’s side-arm controller breaking. Once again, their Subaru was relatively brand-new, and it only had about 44,000 miles on it. The owner had to pay about $650 to fix this issue, and as a result, Car Complaints rated it as a “fairly significant” problem on the severity scale.
Again, while these issues occurred with a relatively new 2018 Forester, Car Complaints did not receive many complaints overall about these two issues. They were simply the most recent and the most expensive ones that Car Complaint owners reported.
The 2018 Subaru Forester’s other new issues

Car Complaints reported two other new issues with the 2018 Forester, but unfortunately, there is no data on the average price of repairs for these problems. That said, they could potentially be serious issues. The first issue had to do with the car’s windows not rolling up. The owner thinks that this may be an electrical issue, but they didn’t want to take their car into the shop for a diagnosis.
Once again, the mileage on this Subie was also relatively brand-new, as it only had about 40,000 miles on it. Car Complaints also said that it was a “fairly significant” problem. The other new problem on the 2018 Forester, once again, happened at about 40,000 miles. And, once again, the owner did not want to take their car into the shop for a diagnosis, so it’s not clear how much it’d cost for repairs.
That said, this could potentially be a serious issue. This issue had to do with the 2018 Forester’s backup camera not working correctly from time to time. Obviously, this could be dangerous in some situations, but it’s also not clear how common a problem it is. In any case, Car Complaints said that this issue is “definitely annoying.”
Subaru is one of the automobile manufacturers that has switched nearly their entire line of vehicles to a CVT transmission. Many customers have had problems with the Subaru CVT transmission in the past, but the company does seem committed to keeping it in all of their all-wheel-drive vehicles. Their CVT transmission, which they call Lineartronic, is designed to get the most out of the 4-cylinder boxer engines that Subaru uses. That gives you more responsive acceleration, and a quicker one as well. It's also really well suited for being fuel efficient in city driving. It's lighter weight, and smaller, so you can theoretically be saving money at the pumps overall.
Even though Subaru is clearly in love with the CVT, not all drivers are. There have been many issues in the past with Subaru CVT.
Subaru's Warranty Extension
In July of 2017, Subaru notified their customers that they were offering an extended warranty that affected about 1.5 million vehicles. The warranty covered problems with the continuously variable transmission that had been giving owners of numerous Subaru vehicles that were manufactured between 2012 and 2017 problems. This was done instead of issuing a recall which many customers felt was warranted because of the issues they were facing.
Well over 100 Subaru owners lodged complaints relating to problems with the CVT transmission that prompted the warranty extension that Subaru offered. There are also many additional complaints that came out relating to the cost of repairs and the poor performance that customers felt the CVT transmission was giving them overall. Subaru’s spokesman was quoted as saying that the company was not comfortable with the level of unhappiness that their customers were experiencing. For that reason, they decided to alleviate concerns from their customers by offering the extended warranty.
Some of the feedback that customers were giving was pretty scary stuff. One owner of a 2011 Subaru Outback said that their vehicle would shudder and stall when they came to a stop and the engine would shut off. Lurching at random times, they were almost in an accident more than once because drivers behind them had to stop abruptly due to their vehicle simply shutting down. That particular driver ended up spending over $4,000 to repair the transmissions torque converter.
Most people felt that the move by Subaru was meant to sidestep a full recall. If there is a problem that causes a vehicle to stall frequently, then a recall is typically issued. By extending the warranty, they were sort of circumventing the normal process of how things are dealt with.
For numerous models, Subaru switched the transmission warranty for 5 years or 60,000 miles to a 10 year or 100,000-mile warranty. This affected models such as the Subaru Legacy and Outback, the Subaru Forester, the Subaru Impreza, the Subaru Crosstrek, and the Subaru WRX. Any vehicles that fell outside of the date range or mileage were given a one-year warranty extension that ended in July of 2018.
The 2018 Subaru CVT
2018 was the cut-off year for Subaru's warranty extension. That meant that, at least as far as the manufacturer was concerned, there were to be no issues with CVT transmission in the 2018 model year.

Subaru Impreza: The 2018 Subaru Impreza has had very few problems reported with the transmission being an issue. What is CVT Transmission?
CVT stands for a continuously variable transmission. It's a kind of automatic transmission that is meant to be smoother and more fuel efficient than either traditional automatic or manual transmission. The idea with a CVT transmission is that rather than have firm gradients as you shift one gear to the next you have more of a smooth linear progression from lower gears to higher gears.
Think of traditional transmissions as steps. You start on the first step; you go to the second step. CVT transmission is more like a ramp where you gradually move on up without ever having to fully commit to the next step in the process.
In theory, CVT transmission should work in a much smoother fashion than the older styles of transmission. It should allow you to get the maximum use of your engine because you're not having that moment where you sort of clunk from one gear to the next and then have to pick up speed again. Subaru has definitely had some problems with CVT transmission in the past. Even though they narrowly averted having to do a recall, and a lot of drivers are still leery of how CVT transmission works, it's pretty reliable these days. That said, all you have to do is Google CVT transmission problems and you'll see a lot of articles and forums come up where people discuss exactly what it is, they don't like about CVT. Even the sound is just annoying to some people, and that's what it's working absolutely properly.
Whatever it is that Subaru did between 2017 and 2018, they definitely got CVT transmission on track again. If you're in the market for a 2018 model of anything that Subaru produces, you'll probably end up having an okay experience with your vehicle. Obviously, no car is going to be perfect, and you could definitely end up getting unlucky and having one with issues. But there don't seem to be any lemons that were produced across the board in 2018 by Subaru.
