[2021 Tips] How to Fix Corsair iCUE Not Working on Windows 10

Many gamers have run into the Corsair iCUE not working issues, and the common symptoms include iCUE not starting or not detecting any devices. If you’re on the same boat, don’t worry. Though the issues might seem tricky, they’re always fixable.

Maybe it’s just a glitch. So before troubleshooting, you should first try restarting your PC or re-plugging your Corsair devices.

Try these fixes

You might not need to try them all. Simply work your way down until you hit the one that does the trick.

  1. Rebuild the config files
  2. Reinstall Corsair iCUE
  3. Reinstall the device driver
  4. Make sure Windows is up to date

Fix 1: Rebuild the config files

iCUE might not work properly if the config files are corrupted. There’re many reasons to this, and a quick fix you can try is rebuilding all the config files.

Here’s how:

  1. Make sure iCUE is closed. You can press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to bring up Task Manager to verify.
  2. On your keyboard, press Win+R (the Windows logo key and the R key). In the popped up Run box, type or paste %appdata% and click OK.
  3. Cut the Corsair folder and paste it on your Desktop as a backup. Then restart iCUE and it will generate new config files.
  4. Now you can check if iCUE is working as expected. If it is, reset your settings in iCUE.

Fix 2: Reinstall Corsair iCUE

The issue could also mean there’s something wrong with the program itself. Issues could come up during installation or an update. You can try to reinstall the software and see how it goes.

  1. On your keyboard, press Win+R (the Windows logo key and the R key). Then type or paste appwiz.cpl and click OK.
  2. Right click CORSAIR iCUE 4 Software and select Uninstall. Once done, restart your computer.
  3. Go to the iCUE download pageand get the latest version of iCUE.

Once the installation completes, launch iCUE and see if the reinstallation solved your issue.

If this doesn’t do the trick, check out the next fix.

Fix 3: Reinstall the device drivers

iCUE relies on drivers to control your gears, so it’s also likely that you’re in fact having a driver issue. You can try to reinstall the device drivers and see if that works for you.

Uninstall the driver

  1. On your keyboard, press Win+R (the Windows logo key and the R key) to invoke the Run box. Type or paste devmgmt.msc and click OK.
  2. In Device Manager, click to expand the category and locate your device (For example you can see Audio inputs and outputs for headset drivers). Then right-click and select Uninstall device.
  3. In the pop-up window, select Delete the driver software for this device and click Uninstall.

    Uninstalling drivers could stop your device from working. Normally it’d be fixed after a reboot. But if you want to minimize the risk, you can try to update your drivers instead.

  4. Restart your PC and check if iCUE works now.

Usually Windows would install the generic drivers when booting up. But if it doesn’t or the generic drivers aren’t working, you can continue to update your drivers.

Update your drivers

In most cases, updating drivers can have the same effect as reinstalling. You can update your drivers manually, by visiting the Corsair website, downloading the driver installer for your device and installing step by step. But if you’re not comfortable playing with device drivers, you can update automatically with Driver Easy.

  1. Download and install Driver Easy.
  2. Run Driver Easy and click the Scan Now button. Driver Easy will then scan your computer and detect any problem drivers.
  3. Click Update All to automatically download and install the correct version of all the drivers that are missing or out of date on your system.
    (This requires the Pro version – you’ll be prompted to upgrade when you click Update All. If you don’t want to pay for the Pro version, you can still download and install all the drivers you need with the free version; you just have to download them one at a time, and manually install them, the normal Windows way.)

Once you’ve updated all your drivers, restart your PC and check if iCUE is working.

If the latest drivers can’t help you fix the issue, you can move on to the next solution.

Fix 4: Make sure Windows is up to date

Besides drivers, you should always make sure your system is up to date so that there won’t be compatibility issues. Usually the update happens automatically, but you can also check manually to make sure.

  1. On your keyboard, press Win+I (the Windows logo key and the i key) to open the Windows Settings app. Click Update & Security.

  2. Click Check for updates. Windows will then download and install the available patches. It might take some time (up to 30 mins).

To confirm you’ve installed all the system updates, repeat these steps until it prompts “You’re up to date” when you click Check for updates.

I've recently improved my PC setup with an AIO Cooler from Corsair (H100i RGB Platinum SE 240mm) and an extra HDD. After installing this, I've had issues with random display freeze and having to reboot the PC through the power button. During the freezes where I've had CPU and GPU monitoring open, there's been no excessive temperatures (they're always around 40-69 degrees) however, the GPU usage has popped to 100% on Spotify a few times during the freeze. I tried troubleshooting by doing the following things one by one, sadly it keeps freezing. Funny enough this never happens during gaming, but mostly during less heavy processes like studying, browsing, just playing music, zoom meetings etc.
Could it perhaps be the fact that I changed from HDMI on my 4k monitor to display port? I did so while changing the coolers, so right before the freezing started. When the PC freezes the zoom meeting or whatever I'm in, still keeps going in the background, so only the display with freeze, the sound etc keeps running.

Troubleshooting:
  1. Deleting Spotify
  2. Deleting iCue software (corsair software for the RGB fans)
  3. Reformatting the PC and reinstalling Windows 10
  4. Checking if the AIO cooler was tightened too much on the CPU
  5. Updated GPU software

Corsair is known for just how great and reliable most of its peripherals are. While these peripherals are usually great on their own, but Corsair provides users with the chance to make them even better and more efficient and ever thanks to certain software.

This software is none other than the Corsair Utility Engine, which we’ll be discussing today. Known by many as iCUE for short, the Corsair Utility Engine provides a lot of great accessibility and customization features which make using Corsair gaming devices much more enjoyable.

That’s because the software’s features allow users to change the way these devices work to better match the exact preferences of a user. But users can only make the most out of these features when they use iCUE. A problem with this is that sometimes the Corsair Utility Engine keeps crashing. Here’s how to prevent it from crashing if you’re encountering it while opening the program too.

How to Fix Corsair Utility Engine Keeps Crashing?

  1. Delete ASUS Plugin

There’s a plugin that users had to manually install in order for the iCUE to work properly. This is the ASUS plugin that performed a number of different functions. While this used to be a very important aspect of the application at one time, it is no longer one and is actually much more problematic than it is helpful. That said, it is very important users get rid of it from the installation folder and then try to open iCUE again.

The reason why this is an effective solution is because of the fact that Corsair actually implemented a pre-designed ASUS plugin to the Corsair Utility Engine in an update. This makes it so that the version which was manually installed interferes with the new one, making iCUE crash at launch and not allowing users to make the most out of it.

  1. Turn Off Precision X

An application that a lot of Corsair Utility Engine users might have installed on their device and use regularly is Precision X. This solution is one that’s meant specifically for all these users. The software is known to cause many problems with the iCUE, which is why we recommend that you keep Precision X disabled at all times when attempting to launch it.

  1. Corrupted iCUE Profile

There are profiles in the iCUE software that make it possible for it to work as it does. If these are corrupted in any shape or form, they can cause problems with the program that can result in it crashing over and over again whenever users try to launch it. This could be the reason why users are encountering this problem.

To solve it, open up the File Explorer in Windows and then type %APPDATA%. A menu will appear once you search for this. From within this menu, try to locate a folder related to Corsair and then rename it to Corsair.BAD. Now simply restart iCUE and the software will automatically create a new profile, preventing any further crashes.

  1. Repair iCUE

A solution for this problem which should almost definitely work if all others have failed is to repair it. Instead of the profiles, there could be some other corrupted file related to iCUE causing this issue. This can easily be fixed by the system if you follow a few specific steps.

Just go to the Control Panel in Windows and then open up the Apps menu. From within this menu, choose the Apps & Features menu which will allow you to find a Corsair Utility Engine-related option. Click on this and select modify. Now simply click on the option which allows users to repair the application. Once the repair process is complete, just restart iCUE and it should work.

  1. Complete Uninstall/Reinstall

The last solution left to try is to completely wipe out all Corsair Utility Engine content on your PC after reinstalling the software. Now just reinstall it from the official Corsair website and all the previous errors with it should no longer reoccur. Just try to open iCUE after the application has successfully been reinstalled and it should work fine without ever crashing.

The system is complaining about a hardware problem.

A. Are you overclocking anything? If so STOP! OC can not only cause BSOD it can make troubleshooting virtually impossible.

B. Have you installed any performance or OC software such as MSI Afterburner, AMDRyzenMaster. Intel's Extreme Tuning or Performance Maximizer, or CPU-Z? Some of those and others change system settings during installation which are still in effect even when the program is not running. Even iCUE or other RGB hardware and/or software may be involved.

C. After both A. & B. reset the BIOS back to the system/motherboard maker's recommendations.

D. Be sure the SSD's have the latest firmware from their makers.

E. Try removing and reseating all cards, memory, and cables (both ends when possible) - actually remove and replace - do not just snug (on a PC) and clean out the dust bunnies and vents. (Of course remove ALL power prior to opening the case.) <-- Please do this as it is the number one cause of the issues you are experiencing (by far).

F. Try adding a fan blowing on high onto the motherboard's CPU & GPU areas. The point is to increase airflow to maximize heat dissipation. <-- Please do this no matter how much cooling you have now.

1. Over-Clocking -> best to reset ALL to the defaults especially while troubleshooting

2. Memory (check thoroughly as indicated below).

3. Power Supply (see below to ensure you have enough power).

4. Over-heating - even if the overall temps are within specs a single component can be too sensitive to even the normal levels of heat and fault at a lower temp. Try adding a fan blowing into the case to reduce the effects of heat even more than the cooler usually does. Of course, ensure all built-in fans are running.

Memory tests do not catch all errors such as mismatched memory (possible even for sticks that appear to be identical) and when faster memory is placed in the system behind slower memory. So it is best to also swap sticks in and out to check for those even if all memory tests fail to show a problem.

I just had a 3rd freeze, less than an hour apart from the last. This time I know it happened at 3:49 and I hit the reset button for my pc at 3:54, checking the events the only logs I see are from 3:54 and onward, so I think the shutdown unexpectedly was me hitting the reset button, so at this point, I am not sure what is causing the freezing, however, I know this time compared to the last times, the HID device it complains about normally I would uninstall this device, this time however I left it and had this freeze again. I am hoping this is the cause, this would mean it's my HID-compliant Driver? which should be up to date, or possibly my software Razer Kraken Headset that is causing this.

Be sure to review and use all the A. - F. and the ID41 methods in my previous post.

It is definitely a hardware issue and you probably need the assistance of the motherboard and other major device makers' supports for diagnostics help and possible RAMs'.

It could be any hardware though the motherboard, CPU, GPU, or PSU are the most common.

Try reducing the system down to as simple as possible including minimum memory to see if you can reach a point of stability and work from there.

Wallpaper engine + ICUE freeze/crash/need to force restart PC
i newly reformatted my pc today cause i bought a newly wd black 250gb nvme m.2 ssd.
i installed icue and wallpaper engine, and every 5-15mins, my pc will freeze, and i cant do anything, ctrl + alt +del nothing. i have to force restart.

i tried only icue running on background = no crashes
but once i open wallpaper engine my pc freezes.
