How to Make Mugs with Infusible Ink Pens and the Cricut Mug Press

Last week, I showed you how to make custom mugs by cutting out designs from Infusible Ink Transfer Sheets. Today, I’m going to show you how to make mugs with Infusible Ink Pens. By drawing, writing, and/or coloring onto regular printer paper, you can create super detailed images and infuse them right onto mugs with the Cricut Mug Press. I’ll tell you out front, this is a total game changer for your mug designs, so let me show you exactly how to do it!
How to Make Mugs with Infusible Ink Pens

Series: Getting Started with the Cricut Mug Press

I am so excited to share with you a bunch of tips and tricks for creating flawless mugs in mere minutes with the new Cricut Mug Press! Here is everything you need to know to start making mugs today!

Supplies Needed

To create drawn designs on your mugs, here are the supplies you will need:

All Cricut Mug Press supplies are now available at Cricut.com, as well as Target, Walmart, Amazon, Michales, JoAnn, Hobby Lobby, and HSN.

How to Make Mugs with Infusible Ink Pens

There are two different techniques for making pen designs on your mugs: Pen Only and Pens+Transfer Sheets. I’m going to teach you both today!

Technique 1: Pen Only Designs

The first technique I want to teach you is the “pen only” method, which was used to create the heart mug below. In this instance, you don’t cut ANYTHING out of the Infusible Ink Transfer Sheets and instead create 100% of your design with the Infusible Ink Pens.

How to Make Mugs with Infusible Ink Pens

Here are the specific materials I used for the Heart Mug:

Cricut Explore Air | Cricut Mug Press | Standard Grip Mat | White Printer Paper | Butcher Paper | Fine Point Infusible Ink Pen in Black | Array of Infusible Ink Markers | 12 oz Mug Blank

Designing Pen Images for Your Mugs

When creating pen designs for your mugs, it’s very important that any design you create in Cricut Design Space is set to “Draw” rather than “Cut.” If you are unclear about creating pen-friendly designs, see my full Cricut Pen Tutorial HERE.

Start with the Mug Design Setup project file in Cricut Design Space and select your preferred size and edge:

Search the Image Library for “Draw” designs (you can filter for pen-only designs using the left-hand menu buttons) and add them to your mug template. Ensure you do not put any drawn design outside the edge, toward the tabs. On my heart design below, see how all the hearts are within the straight vertical edges on either side.

If you’d like to use my Heart Mug Design, you can find it HERE.

TIP! If you want to use different color pens for various parts of your design, you can learn how to do that HERE.

When you are satisfied with your mug design, Attach everything together, and send the design to cut.

Cutting Your Drawn Designs

Before sending to cut, be sure to use these specifications:

  • “Mirror” your design. (Even if you aren’t using text, get into the habit of mirroring your designs every time.)
  • Choose Laser Copy Paper from the Custom Materials settings.
  • Load the correct pen into your machine according to the prompts within Design Space. (For any designs with small details, I HIGHLY recommend using the Fine Point Pens.)

Once you click the flashing button on your machine, the Cricut will first draw your mug design and then cut out the mug template shape onto plain white printer paper.

Coloring & Drawing By Hand

Here is something that is SO SUPER FUN about using Infusible Ink Pens. Not only can your Cricut machine draw some incredible designs, but you can then color them in however you wish! I highly recommend using the Fine Point Pens (0.4 weight) for drawing, and the Infusible Ink Markers (1.0) or Freehand Markers to color in any designs.

How to Make Mugs with Infusible Ink Pens

Think of all the possibilities here! You technically don’t even need a Cricut machine in this instance! If you’re an artist or want your kids to make their own designs, just use Infusible Ink Pens to draw and color right onto plain paper (just make sure it fits on the mug)!

How to Make Mugs with Infusible Ink Pens

Transferring Pen Designs to Your Mugs

Once you’re happy with the pen design, it’s time to transfer it to the mug! You will need the butcher paper and Heat Resistant Tape for this step.

Start by cleaning your mug with a lint roller or cloth (not shown). Then, decide where you want your design on the mug and tape it in place, ink-side down, using Heat Resistant Tape. Remember to not place any of your design under the handle since the Cricut Mug Press doesn’t reach that far around.

THIS STEP IS VERY IMPORTANT: Next, wrap the mug in 3 layers of white butcher paper and secure with more Heat Resistant Tape.

Why? You applied the Infusible Ink Pens to plain ol’ printer paper. When heated, the ink will bleed, A LOT, through the paper. If you do not wrap the mug in 3 layers of butcher paper, the ink will stain the interior channel of the Cricut Mug Press, making a mess and potentially affecting future designs.

Once wrapped, place your mug into the Cricut Mug Press, close the lever, and wait until the machine beeps (which should take about 5-8 minutes).

When the machine beeps, remove your mug by opening the lever and lifting the mug out by the handle. Remember, the mug will be VERY hot but the handle will be cool. Place the mug on a heat-safe surface for about 15-2o minutes to cool before handling.

Once cool, take all the paper layers off the mug. In the picture below, I’ve only removed the butcher paper. See how much ink transferred onto it! If you didn’t wrap your mug in butcher paper, that ink would be all over the inside of your Cricut Mug Press!

When you remove the printer paper layer, you’ll reveal a vibrant design made from Infusible Ink Pens! I adore the hand-colored effect of this one!

How to Make Mugs with Infusible Ink Pens

TIP! Notice how at the very bottom of my mug, the design “ghosted” a bit (meaning it smudged). That is because I didn’t tape the paper to the mug (like I emphatically state in this tutorial). If you have a mug design that goes all the way to the edge…made with either Pens or Transfer Sheets…always, always, always tape the design around the bottom of the mug!

Technique 2: Pen+Transfer Sheet Designs

The other way to use the Infusible Ink Pens is to layer drawn designs over images cut from the Infusible Ink Transfer Sheets. This is exactly how I made my most favorite design yet: the Knitting Lover Mug! How to Make Mugs with Infusible Ink Pens

Here are the specific materials I used for the Knitter Mug:

Cricut Explore Air | Cricut Mug Press | Standard Grip Mat | White Printer Paper | Butcher Paper | Fine Point Infusible Ink Pen in Black | Rainbow Watercolor Splash Transfer Sheet

Designing Pen+Transfer Sheet Images for Your Mugs

The design process for this two-step mug is very similar, but in this case you will add BOTH a “Cut” design and “Draw” design to your mug template. You can start with the Mug Design Setup file (like we did before) or you can use one of the pre-made designs in the Design Space Library.

For my Knitting Lover Mug, I started with the Large Painted Shapes Mug Design (#M1D0152B8) design and then layered individual “Draw” images from the Knitting Set over each blob.

If you’d like to access this specific mug design, click HERE.

The biggest thing to remember is how to designate each element of your design:

  • Any part of your design that you want created from the Infusible Ink Transfer Sheets should be set to “Cut”
  • Any part of your design that you want drawn with the Infusible Ink Pens or Markers should be set to “Draw”

Cutting Your Pen+Transfer Sheet Designs

Before sending to cut, be sure to use these specifications:

  • “Mirror” your design. (Even if you aren’t using text, get into the habit of mirroring your designs every time.)
  • Use these Custom Materials settings:
    • For your “Cut” layer: Infusible Ink Transfer Sheet
    • For your “Draw” layer: Laser Copy Paper
  • Load the correct pen into your machine according to the prompts within Design Space (For any designs with small details, I HIGHLY recommend using the Fine Point Pens.)

Once you click the flashing button on your machine, follow the machine prompts to both “Cut” and “Draw” your designs.

Once done, remove both mug designs from your mats and weed as needed (if you need help with this step, click HERE).

Transferring Both Designs to Your Mug

You will transfer the two layers of your design separately, so this heating process is a little longer than all the other mugs we’ve made.

You will start with transferring the Infusible Ink Transfer Sheet design. For detailed instructions on how to do this, click HERE.

After you cleaned your mug and taped the design in place, insert it into the Cricut Mug Press and heat fully.

NOTE: ONLY the Infusible Ink Transfer Sheet design is on the mug at this point.

Once the Cricut Mug Press beeps, remove the mug by the handle and place it on a heat-safe surface to fully cool. Once cool, remove the Infusible Ink Transfer Sheet to reveal your base design.

Next, add your “Draw” design on top. Just like we did with the pen-only design, wrap the mug in the laser copy paper first (with the pen designs toward the mug) and then cover it with 3 layers of butcher paper.

You will then re-heat the mug, fully, to transfer the pen design to the mug on top of the existing design.

After the machine beeps, remove the mug, and let it cool. Then remove the butcher paper and laser copy paper to see the pen design transferred to the mug!

How to Make Mugs with Infusible Ink Pens

Take note of the discarded laser copy paper in the image above (bottom left corner). See how a tiny bit of the pink/orange blob designs bled onto the paper? When you double-press mugs, your first layer will loose just a smidge of its vibrancy. As such, this technique is recommended for brightly-colored, highly-saturated Transfer Sheets and Pens.

How to Make Mugs with Infusible Ink Pens

This double-press method is also how I made the monogrammed mug below…

How to Make Mugs with Infusible Ink Pens

In this instance, I cut the “D” from a hot pink Infusible Ink Transfer Sheet, and wrote the script name using (the thicker) Black Infusible Ink Marker.

Just as I described with the Knitter mug, I first transferred the D…

…then pressed the mug again with the drawn name design over top.

How to Make Mugs with Infusible Ink Pens

TIP! When double-pressing your mugs, I HIGHLY recommend using the full mug templates for your designs. Not only does this ensure you line up your designs just right, but it also makes sure the entire design is covered when re-pressing. In the example above, if you cut the name on a smaller scrap and just taped it over the “D” with Heat Resistant Tape (instead or wrapping the entire mug), the tape lines could distort your original “D.”

How to Make Mugs with Infusible Ink Pens

I must admit, making designs with BOTH the Infusible Ink Transfer Sheets and the Infusible Ink Pens is my absolute favorite method. The contrast between the larger, patterned images with the refined pen details results in mugs no one will believe you made yourself!

Now that I’ve fully covered how to make mugs with Infusible Ink Pens, let me know what questions you have in the comments!

Now that we’ve finished celebrating the New Year it’s time to get back to business. The start of the New Year brings about many goals and launching a business is one that is rewarding on all levels.

Have you ever thought about starting a business selling coffee mugs? Sure there’s tons of coffee mugs that we see all over the place. However, for the true coffee and tea lover,  you simply can never ever have too many mugs.

The Cricut Explore Air makes it quite feasible to launch your own mug business right from the comfort of your home. Here’s how:

The supplies are pretty straight forward. You would need a Cricut Explore Air, Permanent Adhesive vinyl (commonly referred to as Oracle 651), coffee mugs and some catchy phrases.

Using the Cricut Explore Air you can design your mugs right in Design Space. Design Space is the online website companion that allows Cricut Explore Air Users to design projects to print and cut with the Explore Air. With a membership you’ll have access to over 50,000 images and DIY projects.

Before you decide to launch it’s a good idea to do a little research and practice. The best way to do this is by joining some groups and watching a few YouTube tutorials.

My favorite groups on Facebook are:

Cricut Design Space
Cricut Newbies and Pros
Cricut Craft Room

All of these groups are full of information. Every question you think you might have will be answered in one of these groups. The next thing you have to consider is supplies.

Your local dollar store is a perfect place to get some starter mugs. If you’re lucky you’ll have a dollar store that carries ceramic mugs in multiple colors. If not, the standard white mugs are just as great, because you can use various color vinyl to make the catchy slogans for your mugs.

For the vinyl my go-to supply is CheapHTV.  Their prices are right on point too.

Once you’ve gotten the hang of designing your mugs then you can venture off to a wholesale supplier of the mugs. When you purchase the mugs in bulk and wholesale you end up getting a better deal overall in quality and pricing.

One of my most trusted suppliers of  wholesale mugs is Discount Mugs. They offer very competitive prices on their mugs and they offer other promotional products as well.

All in all, can you launch a mug business for less than $500.

The Cricut Explore Air retails for  $249. Excellent price for a multi use machine.

You can get a bundle of vinyl to start you off for about $100. Additionally, you can get 50 mugs from Discount Mugs for about $76. That’s a total of $425. It leaves you with $75 to purchase shipping supplies.

Most designers retail their mugs from about $15 to $25 each. So for $500 investment you stand to gain roughly $750-$1,250 in return from your initial investment. Are you convinced yet? Have questions? Go ahead and ask away.

Where to find the best craft vinyl blanks for your Cricut projects.

Craft vinyl is an exciting material for crafters. Once you have mastered your Cricut machine and know where to find all those great supplies, the question will come up of where to look for affordable and stylish craft vinyl blanks.

Where to find the best craft vinyl blanks

Okay, so where do we actually need to look to find the best craft vinyl blanks? Well, that depends on what you are searching for! Many crafters first look for shirts and clothing blanks, which is where we will start. But I will also cover where I purchase things like wood signs, ornament blanks, glasses, tumblers, and more!

where to buy blank t-shirts for screen printing or Iron-on HTV designs

There are many websites that come up when you search for the best t-shirts to use with HTV but I am sharing the ones that I have personally tried and think are the best. Also, don’t be afraid to check stores! You’d be surprised what you can find at Walmart or Target.

Bella Canvas Tanks and T-shirts

Probably the most popular t-shirt blanks are the Bella Canvas brand. Benefits of the Bella Canvas shirts include buying in bulk, soft fabric, and a variety of colors and styles. You can easily find both men’s and women’s shirts in basic tees, tank tops, and raglan shirts too. Bella Canvas also has kids’ options!

Bella canvas tank tops
Bella canvas t-shirts
Best craft vinyl blanks for your Cricut projects. Discover where to find the best t-shirts, hats, signs, tumblers, and more for your Cricut crafts!

Be sure to check out Amazon for Bella Canvas too especially if you are looking for just a couple of shirts to start before buying wholesale.

Jiffy Shirts

Jiffy is very popular too. With a large selection of shirts for men, women, and kids, plus other items like hats, jackets, and sweatshirts you will have a lot to pick from.

Gildan Shirts and Hans on Bulk Apparel

Bulk Apparel is a very large site full of shirts perfect for your craft vinyl blanks. They offer a range of brands from Bella Canvas to Gildan, Hands, JIffy, and a few others. Bulk Apparel is a great one-stop site and affordable for those trying to sell their shirts. I usually shop here first!

Baby/Kids

All of the websites already mention offer kids apparel that I would recommend, some offer baby onesies as well. For additional shirts or onesie craft vinyl blanks for kids, I would recommend Happy Crafters which has a good selection of baby and kids items.

For more kid-friendly apparel check out this amazing site here!

Blank t-shirts for kids.
Blank baby onesies for crafts

Speaking of blank items for kids and babies let’s look at the best craft vinyl blanks for bibs and blankets. Amazon had several bulk options for bibs. I like these traditional blank bibs and the bandana ones (could work for dogs too!)

Baby blankets are another item that is often personalized with iron-on vinyl or sublimation designs. I love KidsBlanks.com for baby blankets, sleepers, and even clothing.

Amazon also has some good muslin baby blankets that can be personalized as gifts.

Where to find blank hats for vinyl crafts

Hats are a very popular craft vinyl blank to customize. I love using my Easypress Mini for hat projects. Happy Crafters has several hat options to choose from in many colors and styles.

Blank Stainless Steel Tumblers

Finding cheap blank tumblers is always a challenge. After years of purchasing many brands, I have found three suppliers I love the most. My top two choices when purchasing stainless steel tumblers are Steel Magnolia Tumblers and bulk sets of tumblers on Amazon. A close runner-up to Steel Magnolia Tumblers is also Hogg Outfitters, which has storyboard tumblers and lots of kid-friendly sippy cup blank tumblers too! Also, check out their stainless steel water bottles.

Sublimation Tumber Blanks

Before we leave the blank tumbler territory, I like to include sublimation tumblers as well. Both Amazon and Steel Magnolia Tumblers offer sublimation tumbler blanks!

blank sublimation tumblers

Blank Mugs and Glasses

Making custom mugs and wine glasses is another popular option for Cricut machine owners. Again, Amazon offers a lot for the mugs and glasses as well as Bulk Bar Products which has a drinkware and wine section.

For mugs, I like to purchase Cricut’s sublimation-friendly mugs or these mugs sets here.

Blank Plastic Tumblers and Waterbottles

Some folks prefer the double-walled plastic tumblers which I purchase from Amazon or Starbucks. And bulk blank water bottles can be found here or here, in addition to Direct Mugs.

Ring Dishes Craft Blanks

Adding personalized details to ring dishes is a great gift. You can also explore your local Dollar Tree for some great inexpensive dish blanks that make excellent blanks for vinyl crafts.

Tote and Makeup Bags

Totes, makeup bags, and drawstring bags are perfect for iron-on vinyl.

Acrylic Blanks for Crafts

If you own the Cricut Maker machine then engraving is an option for you. I love some of the small acrylic blanks on Amazon but my favorite source is the Craft Cameleon.

Wood Blanks for Crafting

Our craft vinyl blanks list wouldn’t be complete without wood suggestions! Every crafter loves to make a DIY wood sign at some point or at the very least will use some form of wooden craft blank. I’ve made many signs with Cricut before and even used my vinyl on things like trays, wood rounds, and chalkboards, like these back-to-school signs with vinyl for my kiddos! You can get the file here in the Freebie Vault!

DIY Christmas Ornament Blanks

Every Christmas I had some kind of handmade DIY ornament to my holiday collection, and I know I am not alone since so many crafters such for ornament craft vinyl blank, and using your Cricut to customize Christmas ornaments is so fun!

Below is a list of my favorite ornament blanks, including where to find clear round ornaments for DIY glitter ornaments. Usually, I will shop at Michaels Craft Store first for clear ornaments but if they are out of season then the online resources below are great! I also love using arabesque tile ornaments with iron-on vinyl, permanent vinyl, or even printable vinyl.

Blank Jars and Vases for Craft Vinyl

I often find myself decorating flower vases that I use to fill with paper flowers as well as apothecary jars that are ideal for storage and organization! My favorite places to get vases and jars are Michaels Craft stores! Amazon is a close second with plastic apothecary alternatives.

One of my personal favorites is these large glass jars that can be customized as cookie jars or dog treat containers!

Hand/Tea Towels for HTV Vinyl

Personalizing hand towels or tea towels are a cute gift to give at Christmas time or yet another way to add a unique item to your home. These hand towels are ideal for drying things like dishes while these lighter tea towels sold in bulk with multiple color choices are best are decorative only towels.

Pot holders for Iron-On Vinyl

I love to personalize pot holders for easy last-minute Christmas gifts! Check out my tutorial on adding glitter iron-on to potholders. This bulk pack of potholders is my first choice while the colorful set is a great alternative for those who do not want red.

There are countless places out there to find great craft vinyl blanks! This list above should give you a good start!

Let’s Press it Together

Cricut Joy

I’m a sucker for sassy mugs so let’s make one together! The Cricut team has made it possible to use infusible ink transfer sheets with your Cricut Maker, Cricut explore line and even your Cricut Joy. We are going to make this mug using the Cricut Joy, the reason being is that Cricut has made infusible ink joy ready! Again, you can use any of the above machines and one is required to register the Mug Press with Design Space.

Using Design Space, I was able to find an image with a side part as well as skinny jeans. I used the fonts; “close to my heart,” “Beefcakes,” as well as artwork “Female Hair Bangs, “Ankle Skinny Jeans.” When the cutting is complete, remove the infusible ink and weed out the negative space.

Cricut Mugs

When you are ready to apply the transfer to your mug, be sure to clean the surface extremely well. The lint brush is a great way to make sure any debris is removed. Another great thing about Cricut is that when the machine cuts your transfer sheet, it will cut a single layer around the sheet but cut a double layer through the sheet so that you can easily wrap the sticky part under the handle.

The press is a one touch application process, you will turn on the machine through one power on button and wait until you hear a beep to tell you that the press is ready. Once the machine is ready you will then drop the mug into the opening and press down the paddle which will then squeeze around the mug itself. There are five little above the power button that will light up one at a time eventually letting you know with a beep that the mug is ready. Lift the mug out of the press, touching only the handle, and set onto a Cricut Press Mat to cool. The cooling process takes only 20-30 minutes. Once cool, reveal your design by removing the outer layer.

The best mugs for use in Cricut Easy Press

I searched other brands but keep going back to Cricut mugs. They are smooth without imperfections like I have seen in other brands. I usually buy these at Cricut because I get a little discount for being a subscriber. But they were sold out. Thrilled I found them here. They come safely packed in individual boxes with plastic wrap and bubble wrap. One of my mugs was sent to New Zealand and arrive safely. I will always buy Cricut brand mugs. They can not be beat.

OMG - Awesome

Nothing kinder than to give a personalized mug. Cricut has perfect 15oz mugs and each mug is wrapped in plastic and has bubble wrap fitting perfect in a box designed for gift giving. I'm going to always get Cricut mugs going forward. (FYI: People want the 15oz mugs Not the 11oz. LOL)

Change in listing, beware

I ordered a 6 pack of grey mugs. For about $20, one showed up. I went to check the listing to see if I'd lost my mind... it was all different, including the photo. Be carful exactly what you are ordering. I'm returning this mug, which is horribly overpriced.
