For over fifty years, the Ford Mustang has remained the most popular car in the United States. The model made a splash in the American auto market. Thanks to successful advertising and outstanding characteristics, the Mustang is sold annually in an amount of over 200 thousand units. He became the hero of the cinema and computer games and embodies the spirit of the prairie.

Among the many types of engines for the 5th generation, we will focus on the Modular V8. This is a primordially American version, which is sold in large quantities. The cylinders are positioned opposite each other at an angle of 90⁰ and have 3 valves for each chamber. Available working volumes – 4.6, 5.0, 5.3 and 5.4 liters.

The sixth-generation Ford Mustang introduces the economical EcoBoost 2.3L. The first type is turbocharged, has direct fuel injection and 4 cylinders in a row with 16 valves, is also installed on cars for Europe. The standard for the American market is the Mustang with a 3.7-liter Cyclone V6.

Mustangs of the sixth generation received a relief body and a proprietary Ford hexagonal radiator grill, albeit in a sporty form. The taillights are designed in three vertical lines.

How Much Oil Does a Ford Mustang Take?

The 2021 Ford Mustang with the 5.2L 8-cyl engine takes 11.5 quarts (with filter) of 5W-50 synthetic oil. The Ford Mustang with a 5.0L 8-cyl engine takes 10 quarts (with filter) of 5W-20 synthetic oil. A new oil filter and a crush washer are required.

The fifth and sixth generations of the Ford Mustang are known in the GT and Shelby versions. Distinctive features of the GT are deep-set headlights and a radiator grill that protrudes forward a massive bonnet and bumper. Shelby is a series of racing Mustangs. Their feature is parallel lines running over the entire body from the front bumper to the rear. The headlights and the radiator grille seem to fit into a slot and form a single composition.

What Kind of Oil Does a Ford F-150 Take?

Engine Oil is one of the most important fluids your vehicle uses. It keeps your engine running smoothly, and without it you would have catastrophic engine failure before long. Although all oils essentially do the same thing for your vehicle, not every vehicle uses the same type of oil.

Different vehicles have different engines, and each engine usually requires a different type of oil to run properly. Some types of oil are thicker than others; if your engine has smaller holes and valves for the oil to pass through, thicker types of oil can be inefficiently pumped throughout your engine, which ends up causing metal-on-metal contact and leading to terrible engine failure. This also voids your warranty in most cases, leaving you to pay for repairs for a brand new vehicle out of your own pocket.

Where to Find Out What Oil Your Vehicle Needs

Since the consequences of using the wrong oil are so extreme, Ford manufacturers have made it extremely easy to find an answer to the question, “What kind of oil does a Ford F-150 take?” The answer is easily found in a couple of different places.

First and foremost, the easiest place to learn what kind of oil your vehicle takes is right on the cover of your oil fill cap. Oil comes in varying weights, and the weight you’ll need will be clearly displayed on the oil fill cap. For Ford F-150s specifically, the owner’s manual also contains the necessary information regarding the correct weight of oil.

What Kind of Oil Does a Ford F-150 Take?

As stated above, oil comes in different weights such as:

5W-20
15W-40
5W-30
For Ford F-150s the best type of oil is 5W-20. Anything heavier can result in severe complications. All Ford-F150s manufactured from 2004 to 2014 will take this type of oil; the exception is the Ford F-150 with an Ecoboost 3.5L V6 engine. These engines need the slightly heavier – 5W-30 oil.

When it comes to picking a brand, nearly any brand of oil will do as long as it’s the correct weight; however, Ford does prefer that its customers use the Motorcraft brand of oil. The good news is that even if you don’t use Motorcraft you can still get a warranty on your Ford, unless — as previously mentioned — you were using the wrong weight of oil.

One important thing to note about picking an oil is that only brands with an API rating are considered legitimate. You might find one without an API rating that works, but it’s very risky to buy an oil that hasn’t been approved by the American Petroleum Institute.

Parting Thoughts

A Ford F-150 usually takes only one kind of oil, unless it has an EcoBoost engine that requires a heavier oil. Whether you look on the oil cover cap or in the owner’s manual, you now have the information you need to give your Ford F-150 the right oil to help it run smoothly for many years to come.

This automotive maintenance tutorial was specifically written to assist owners of the face lifted 5th generation Ford Mustang equipped with the Coyote 5.0 liter V8 engine (2011, 2012, 2013 & 2014 model years) in changing the motor oil and replacing the canister style oil filter.

Owners of the earlier 5th generation Mustang from 2005 to 2009 and possibly the 4th generation 1994 to 2004 models with the 4.6L V8, 5.4L V8 or 3.7L V6 engines may also find these DIY oil change instructions to be helpful.

The items needed to complete this procedure include a floor jack, two jack stands, an 8mm socket with a 1/4" drive ratcheting wrench, a 15mm socket with 3/8" drive ratcheting wrench, a used oil catch basin, an oil filter wrench (optional), a new oil filter, an automotive funnel and 8 U.S. quarts (or 7.6L) of new SAE 5W-20 oil.

A few compatible replacement oil filters with their part numbers are as follows: Motorcraft FL500S, Royal Purple 20-500, K&N PS-2011, Fram PH10575, Hastings LF641, Pennzoil HPZ-173, Mobil 1 M1-212, Purolator L22500 and Mann # ML1049.

The first steps are to warm up the engine for a few minutes, park the vehicle on a level surface, and shut off the engine.

Warming up the engine will help suspend any contaminants within the old oil and allow it to drain out more quickly.

Engage the emergency / parking brake and chock the rear wheels to prevent the car from moving.

Then pop open the hood, twist off the oil filler cap in the counter clockwise direction and pull up the yellow handled dipstick a few inches.

Removing the oil filler cap and pulling up the dipstick will help prevent a vacuum from forming and allow the old oil to drain out more quickly.

Raise the front passenger side of the vehicle with the floor jack and securely support it with the two jack stands.

Tighten the drain bolt by turning it clockwise with the 15mm socket and ratcheting wrench to just past hand tight or about 20 ft lbs of torque.

Move the used oil catch basin to just below the old oil filter. Spin off the old filter in the counter clockwise direction. If you have trouble spinning the filter, use a filter wrench such as the Lisle 63600.

Allow the old oil to drain from the oil filter mount for a few minutes.

I usually buy the Ford OEM Motorcraft FL500Soil filter since it has excellent reviews on Amazon.

Dip your pinky finger in some new SAE 5W-20 oil and lubricate the rubber o-ring on the new oil filter.

Lubricating the o-ring will help the new filter form a better seal and make it easier to remove at the next oil change.

Make sure that the rubber gasket from the old filter is not still attached to the engine.

Spin on the new filter in the clockwise direction to about 1/4 to 1/3 turn past hand tight.

Do not over tighten the filter and don't use the oil filter wrench to tighten it.

Over tightening the filter may damage the rubber gasket and cause an oil leak.

Check Dipstick Oil Level
Pour in about 7 quarts of the engine's 8 quart total capacity for an oil change with filter replacement.

It is far better to have slightly less oil in an engine than necessary than to have too much.

Temporarily replace the oil filler cap by turning it clockwise and push down the dipstick.

Run the engine for a few minutes, turn it off, and allow the engine to rest for 5 to 10 minutes while the oil drains back down to the pan.

Check the oil level on the dipstick. Slowly pour in more oil while repeatedly checking the level on the dipstick until it reaches at or just below the upper hole in the metal.

You may not need to pour in all 8 quarts (7.6L) of the engine's total capacity depending on how long you allowed the old oil to drain out.

(The 3.7L V6 engine requires 6.0 U.S. quarts (or 5.7 liters) of new oil for an oil change with filter replacement.)

Be sure to record the oil change in your service records. It's also a good idea to check your driveway or garage during the next week for drops of oil that may indicate a leak from the drain bolt or the filter.

To reset the oil life system, follow these steps: 1. Press and release the "Setup" button to display "Oil Life xxx%" 2. Press and hold the "Reset" button for a few seconds and then release it. The oil life indicator should now read 100%.

Will a V6 pull a boat?

Now — the V6 does a great job towing the aluminum Cherokee and it will tow the bigger boat but I would not do it for a very far trip. The mileage will not be good. I used to tow with a ranger that had a 4 liter v6. That truck was a 4×4, with 4:10 rear so it was never going to do great on gas.

Is a V6 good for towing?

Several great SUVs on the market can tow large amounts with a V-6 rather than a V-8 under the hood. A perfect example of this is the Ford Expedition EcoBoost V-7. This vehicle can tow up to 9200 pounds because of its 460 lb-ft of torque. This gives the Expedition the highest tow rating in its class.

Is a V6 good for a truck?

Fuel economy is a major issue, and you’ll see a definite advantage at the pump when you fill up your V6. So if you don’t need your truck to work too hard, a V6 is the better option.

Can I tow with a V6?

For an example of how much a different engine can affect towing, the compact 2020 Chevrolet Colorado with the base four-cylinder engine can tow up to 3,500 pounds, but choosing the V6 engine lets you tow 7,000 pounds. of torque, is capable of towing even more than an F-150 with Ford’s 5.0-liter V8 engine.

Change the Oil

Views this week: 208

Total views: 124k

Author: iturgeon

This awesome guide shows how to change engine oil on a 3.7 V6 Ford Mustang. It includes pictures, parts and all the tools needed. It covers the 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015 V6 Mustangs (some 5th generation and some 6th generation Mustangs).

There's nothing unusual about changing the oil on the v6 Mustang, but this article will cover the whole thing so you can easily buy the parts and tools you need before you get started.

The oil change interval is every 10,000 miles according to the service light. This interval requires a quality filter and synthetic oil. Some people change it more frequently, especially on the first oil change.

Required Tools

Required Parts

Step by Step Instructions

Raise The Car

1

The stock v6 Mustang just barely fit on my normal ramps without rubbing, but it fit just fine.

Place the ramps in front of the front wheels, and very slowly and carefully drive onto the ramps. Note this takes some finesse, so don't be embarrassed if it takes you a couple of tries to do it right.

Just be sure not to drive off the end of the ramps, you'll have a bad day.

Image 4227 from Change the Oil on a 3.7L V6 Ford Mustang

Drain The Oil

2

Locate the oil drain plug, it's on the passenger side of the oil pan, behind the oil service panel.

Place an oil catch pan under the plug and remove the oil drain plug using a 15mm hex socket.

Image 4236 from Change the Oil on a 3.7L V6 Ford Mustang

3

Install the drain plug and torque it to 19 ft-lbs.

Remove the Oil Service Panel

4

The Mustang has a pretty convenient service panel just under the front of the engine bay. This service panel swings out of the way so that you can reach the oil filter.

There are 3 x 8mm hex head bolts at the front of the panel that keep it in place. Remove those 3 bolts.

Image 4230 from Change the Oil on a 3.7L V6 Ford Mustang

5

Once the 3 bolts are out, the panel sort of slides toward the back of the car a little bit and hinges down and out of the way.

Image 4233 from Change the Oil on a 3.7L V6 Ford Mustang

Remove The Oil Filter

6

The oil filter is located on the front, driver's side of the engine block. You can see it (and possibly reach it) from above, but the service panel will allow you to inspect for leaks and much easier reach the filter for removal.

Image 4239 from Change the Oil on a 3.7L V6 Ford Mustang

7

Place your oil drain pan under the filter, it'll drain from the seal as it's removed.

8

Using a strap wrench (maybe you prefer a cap wrench, or a claw wrench), grasp the body of the filter and rotate counter clock wise. Oil will drain out so be sure to catch it before it ends up all over the driveway.

Install The New Oil Filter

9

Clean the oil filter mount surface, and make sure there is no filter gasket left stuck to the engine.

Lube your new filter's gasket by smearing a dab of fresh engine oil on it.

10

Screw on the new filter. Tighten it as much as you can by hand without tools. This should be somewhere around 3/4 of a turn after the gasket touches the block (check your oil filter box for instructions).

Refill With New Oil

11

Remove the oil fill cap and insert an oil funnel. Pour in all 6 quarts of oil.

Make sure you tightened the drain plug and installed the new filter before this step.

Image 4245 from Change the Oil on a 3.7L V6 Ford Mustang

Run The Engine for 30 Seconds

12

Make absolutely sure the engine is full of oil, the filter is tight, and the oil drain is tight.

Start the car for 30 seconds to get the system up to pressure and get the oil moving around the engine.

Turn the engine off when done.

Check the Oil Level And For Leaks

13

Look under the car, checking for leaks near the oil drain plug and new oil filter.

If there are no leaks, check the oil level using the oil dip stick.

Pull the stick, wipe it dry, re-insert, and check how far up the stick the oil reaches. It should be between the two dots on the end of the stick.

Image 4242 from Change the Oil on a 3.7L V6 Ford Mustang

Close The Oil Service Panel

14

Now that you're sure there are no oil leaks, close the oil service panel under the car and re-install the 3 x 8mm bolts. They tighten to 9 ft.lbs.

Reset The Oil Service Light

15

The oil service reset is very simple to do. Here are the buttons on the steering wheel you'll use.

Image 4248 from Change the Oil on a 3.7L V6 Ford Mustang

16

Turn the key to the on (doesn't have to be running) position. Then hit the setup button till you see the oil life screen. This was 2 presses for me.

When you see the oil life screen, hold the "Info Reset" button shown above till the oil life resets.
